Minister of Music Job at Reporter Newspapers in Raleigh

Reporter Newspapers, Raleigh, NC, United States, 27601

DESCRIPTION:

The position of Minister of Music at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church is one that seeks to bring people closer to God through God’s gift to us of music. Not simply an organist nor a choir director, the expectation of the Minister of Music is that they share their own musical gifts with the church, grow these gifts in others, and be a key part of the church’s wider mission to ‘Be the Church’ – the holy body of Christian believers called and commissioned by Jesus our Lord to follow and serve him.

While having flexibility and freedom, the Music Minister will work in collaboration with other staff team members (especially the Rector) in planning the musical elements of our liturgy. Additionally, the Minister of Music will also need to work along with St. Timothy's School staff as well as members of the parish in planning and implementing non-worship music events and activities. Though the role is part-time, St. Timothy’s Church is ambitiously hoping that the music program will develop and grow beyond its role in worship, becoming a means of outreach to both St. Timothy's School and the wider Raleigh community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Choose all choral and organ selections for the weekly 10:00 a.m. Eucharist on Sunday mornings, including:
    1. Preludes/Postludes
    2. Hymns
    3. Service Music
    4. Anthems
    5. Propers/Antiphons (when applicable)
  2. Choose and play all organ music for Sundays, major feasts, weddings, and funerals throughout the year.
  3. Be responsible for recruiting choir members from the congregation to participate in the music program at STC.
  4. Play the organ at all weekly St. Timothy’s School chapel services and the St. Timothy’s School Christmas Pageant (if requested) as well as some pageant rehearsals.
  5. Explore, research, and take initial steps towards creating an after-school choral program including children from the parish, the parish day school, and the community.
  6. Conduct at least one weekly choir rehearsal for the parish choir in addition to any rehearsal times scheduled on Sunday mornings prior to the main service.
  7. Begin a parish children's choir, working with Sunday School teachers to rehearse and accompany the children's choir during worship services or church events.
  8. Supply the Rector and Finance Committee with a proposed music budget by September 1st for the year following.
  9. Recruit and organize additional/seasonal musicians and liaise with the Parish Administrator to ensure payment.
  10. Alongside Parish Administrator, create and maintain a database of instrumentalists and vocalists.
  11. Organize and maintain any music kept on site.
  12. Schedule any regular maintenance of the organ as well as necessary repairs.
  13. Undertake additional responsibilities given by the Rector related to music ministry in the parish.
  14. Undergo an official performance review every 6 months with the Rector (potentially in consultation with a warden).

COMPENSATION:

  1. The position will commence on May 1, 2025 (unless initiated earlier than this date).
  2. The annual compensation for the duties will be $54,000.
  3. The Parish will offer a benefits package that includes individual health coverage, dental, and life insurance through the diocesan insurer.
  4. Retirement benefit in the form of a defined contribution retirement plan. STC will contribute 5% of salary to a Lay 403b plan under the Church Pension Group with the potential to match up to 9% provided the employee contributes the same with pre-tax dollars.
  5. The Minister of Music will receive 11 days of Paid Time Off each year (only 4 may be Sundays) in addition to the following: Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday, the week after Christmas Day (when the church is closed, including New Year's Day), Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day.
  6. $200.00 for each wedding or funeral at St. Timothy’s Church; this is a separate fee that does not make up part of the overall compensation and will be paid to whomever the Minister of Music finds to substitute for them if unable to play.
