Job title: Minister of Music
Reports to: Senior Pastor
Work Hours: Flexibility anticipated due to nature of working with congregational members; however, position will have specific office hours each week.

General Description: Responsible for the planning, coordinating and leading of the traditional music programs of the congregation. Collaborates with Director of Contemporary Music to facilitate blended worship services.

Requirements:

  • Membership in the congregation of American Evangelical Lutheran Church, Prescott, AZ.
  • Professes a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
  • Supports American Lutheran Church’s Biblical and theological conservative position as stated in ALC’s Confession of Faith.
  • Adheres to American Lutheran Church’s Constitution and Bylaws.

Education Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Music or higher degree preferred.
Previous Work Experience: Minimum 3 years successful music leadership of music ensembles representing various age groups of a Lutheran or other liturgical congregation.

Personal Characteristics:

  • Possesses knowledge and appreciation for Lutheran liturgy and music.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in rehearsal and conducting techniques. Keyboard ability is preferred.
  • Possesses ability to recruit, support and work with other musicians.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to growth of his/her spiritual and musical gifts through personal study and continuing education events.
  • Demonstrates loyalty and commitment to team building with staff.
  • Maintains confidentiality, discretion, and loyalty.
  • Exhibits enthusiasm towards the development and growth of music programs for all ages.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Administrative or General

  • Participate in Leadership Team and regular Staff meetings.
  • Coordinate and communicate with administrative staff concerning weekly bulletin liturgy and related worship information.
  • Purchase music and related supplies as provided in the church budget.
  • Maintain office hours.
  • Other duties as directed by supervisor.

Programming

  • Overall accountability for and direction of the traditional music ministry of the church, including all vocal choirs, hand bell choirs, and ensembles of various ages and abilities.
  • Maintain an up-to-date music library.
  • Active involvement in planning traditional and blended worship services.
  • Plan and implement special concerts and services, in addition to weekly worship services.
  • Develop and coordinate music programs for beginning and aspiring young musicians.
  • Monitor upkeep and maintenance of all musical instruments in the department, including but not limited to the following: organ, pianos, keyboard, hand bells, and choir chimes.
  • Coordinate with the pastor to make a final determination of music to be presented for worship and performances for all traditional music groups.

Supervisory

  • Direct supervision of organist and other paid musicians (as needed).
  • Conduct subordinate performance appraisals at least annually and administer salaries within the guidelines established by the church.

Budget

  • Prepare annual budget for Traditional Music department.
  • Oversight of departmental budget.
  • Monitor departmental revenue and expenses monthly.
