Position Summary:
Assistant Professor of Music/Associate Director of Bands. This is a full-time (9-month) tenure track position in the Department of Music within the College of Arts & Humanities with additional remuneration for preparing and instructing the marching band pre-school camp. The anticipated start date for this position is August 4, 2025. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct and lead university bands (marching and concert) in collaboration with the Director of Bands.
- Serve as Associate Director of Bands in recruiting, student retention, alumni and public-school director relationships, and event management.
- Provide leadership and teach courses in the instrumental music education program.
- Develop, teach, and assess undergraduate music courses.
- Engage in continuous improvement of courses.
- Engage students in high-impact learning practices.
- Effectively advise and mentor students at the undergraduate level.
- Engage in creative activities and scholarship, leading to invited performances and peer-reviewed publications.
- Provide impactful departmental, college, university, and professional service to the university, community, and state.
- Additional duties and responsibilities assigned by the Department Head based on departmental needs and candidate strengths.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Exhibit skill in musicianship, conducting, and rehearsal techniques.
- Extensive experience conducting and leading concert and marching bands.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills with a history of working collaboratively with colleagues.
- Ability and interest in recruiting and retaining students in the music and band programs.
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with area public-school music teachers.
- The ability to fluently use education, office, and music software and platforms (i.e. Blackboard, Banner, etc.).
Minimum Requirements:
- Doctoral degree in music.
- Demonstrated success conducting and coordinating college or public-school bands.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree, cognate, or experience in one or more of the following areas: 1) music education; 2) music theory; 3) instrumental studio teaching; 4) class piano; 5) instrumental methods (brass, woodwinds, or strings); 6) elementary music methods.
- Successful teaching experience in secondary schools and higher education.
- Demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining students in varied music ensembles.
- Training and experience teaching online courses.
- Evidence of or potential for fostering an inclusive environment for diverse populations.
Work Location, Environment, and Physical Demands:
The candidate selected to fill this position will work on the Russellville campus of Arkansas Tech University in Witherspoon Hall. ATU will provide the employee with a computer, phone, and office. Required activities include teaching and lecturing, sitting for extended periods, using a keyboard and mouse, and using standard office equipment. Some local travel may be necessary for public schools. The work schedule will include nights and weekends and supervision of outdoor activities.
