The Southwestern College Performing Arts Facility was redesigned in 2011 with updated lighting and sound equipment. This facility is used for local, regional, and national speaking and performance events. The Performing Arts Division vision statement guides the faculty and staff in the curricular and co-curricular offerings. The Division of Performing Arts nurtures intellectual development, aesthetic sensibility, and creativity through stimulating classroom and performance experiences to prepare students as professionals and advocates who cultivate the arts.

Position serves under the direction of the Southwestern College Director of Theatre and coordinates events with the Southwestern College Facilities Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Richardson Performing Arts Center, Messenger Recital Hall, and the Helen Graham Little Theatre. Including but not limited to: physical space oversight, equipment management, and maintenance for both in-house and external (community) activities scheduled in these areas.
  • At the discretion of the Director of Theatre, oversee the general upkeep and maintenance of the Tomari Technical Center as needed per production. This may include oversight of scenery and properties for theatre performances, maintaining a usable, working inventory of props, scenery, tools and the equipment storage space in Tomari, as well as a running inventory of available building materials including lumber, hardware, paint, etc.
  • Oversee compliance with safety standards and policies of anyone using the performance spaces. Assist with training of student personnel on safety practices and procedures and use of shop equipment.
  • Maintain compliance with federal and school policies regarding schedule and time in performance spaces.
  • At the discretion of the Director of Theatre, mentor and assist student workers assigned to Tomari Technical Center, and students assigned to sound, lighting, props, and scenery technical positions and/or work.
  • Establish and maintain regular, published office and shop hours, and communicate with the Director of Theatre when published hours need to be adjusted due to performance schedules.
  • Assist the Director of Theatre in departmental productions with the following:
    • Development and construction of scenery and props
    • Development of and hanging and focusing light plot.
    • Preparation, distribution, and maintenance of sound requirements.
  • Assist the Director of Theatre as support staff during tech week and public performances.
  • Assist the Director of Theatre with planning and execution of tour show demands.
  • Assist with transport, load-in and load-out of scenery, costumes, and equipment needed to be moved from the Tomari Technical Center to on-campus performance spaces and touring shows.

Qualifications

  • A commitment to performance excellence.
  • A Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree with equivalent technical theatre-related professional experience is required.
  • Experience in performance facilities management.
  • Experience in technical theatre with specialization in lighting, sound, costumes, and properties for the stage.
  • A commitment to the work ethic that is needed for high-quality productions. This includes the ability to thrive in high-pressure and time-sensitive theater production environments and to embrace the workload of a production season that necessitates flexible hours- evenings and weekends.
  • Strong commitment to collegiality and the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds and facility needs.

Compensation and Benefits

  • The Technical Director position is a full-time (forty hours per week) position based on a $20 hourly wage. (Approximately $41,600 per year)
  • This position is a “non-exempt” position. When deemed necessary, due to facility demands and approved by the Director of Theatre, the TD will be eligible for overtime compensation.
  • This position is eligible for full-paid Health Benefits.
