This is a part-time Fall/Spring Semester 20-hour week position. Library Assistants are the first point of service for nearly everyone entering the SMJC Library building and are absolutely critical to creating a welcoming environment and ensuring all library users and visitors have an outstanding experience. Library Assistants provide high quality, friendly and effective library services to all library users and visitors, ranging from materials movement and performing routine library support operations. Reports to User Services and Processing Librarian.

The person in this position will work regularly scheduled evening/weekend hours during the Fall and Spring semesters only.

The anticipated schedule for this position is:

Friday: 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Saturday: 10:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m.

Sunday: 2:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.

Since this position will work less than 1000 hours per year, it is not eligible for benefits.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for the timely opening and closing of the library as scheduled.
  • Perform circulation desk functions, including but not limited to: check materials in/out, collect fines and fees, register new borrowers, and provide information concerning the library and collections to patrons in person and on the phone.
  • Greet visitors as they enter the building.
  • Rotate with team members in staffing the Circulation Desk.
  • Manage and maintain assigned sections of the library collection using the Library of Congress classification system to ensure ease of accessibility to these library materials by patrons.
  • Update new student information to accommodate students’ changing status and to provide the correct library privileges to students.
  • Assist with shelving, shelf reading and collection maintenance.
  • Maintain microfiche/film and copier machines and demonstrate usage of microform/film machines to faculty, staff and students; and troubleshoot microform machines.
  • Correspondence via email and fax.
  • Enhance technical and professional knowledge by attending workshops and reviewing publications.
  • Assist in training and supervision of student assistants as needed.
  • Participate in other activities as assigned, including but not limited to: processing donations, repair of library materials, organizing periodic book sales, participating in library inventory, showcase displays, and special projects.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma required, college preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent computer skills, including MS Word and Excel, familiar with database applications, e-mail and internet use.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work independently within a team-based environment.
  • Library work experience and/or knowledge of OCLC, WMS, and other library systems highly desirable.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and/or weekends.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs., push/pull a 50 lb. cart, bend and reach to high/low shelves and work standing or sitting for long periods.
