Position Overview
Join us in the summer of 2025 and help us continue the legacy of fostering creativity, nurturing talent, and celebrating the individual artistic journey at Interlochen. We are seeking creative and efficient Scenic Artists who embody our core values and are committed to nurturing young artists. As a Scenic Artist, you’ll play a major role in assisting with the designing, building, and painting scenery for all of our summer theatre productions while fully immersing yourself in the unique environment that only a summer camp can offer.
What You Get To Do
- Paint all scenic elements, including backdrops, flats, and props, in accordance with the production’s design specifications.
- Work closely with scenic designers and other production team members to execute the visual design, ensuring that all painted elements align with the overall production aesthetic.
- Resolve any challenges that arise during the painting process, such as color matching or texture application.
- Lead painter in the completion of all tasks related to painting.
- Help with loading in and striking of all scenery.

Experience and Skills:What You Need
- Availability 06/02/25 – 08/06/25.
- Prepared to live in a dorm or nature cabin setting with a roommate. While we offer accessible housing accommodations, please note that due to the rustic nature of our camp, these options are limited.
- Must be efficient at multi-tasking.
- A collaborative, creative spirit is a must.
- Significant relevant experience is required.
- Graduate and upper-class college students preferred.
- Valid driver’s license is required.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Position requires someone who is motivated and a quick learner.
- Ability to work occasional long hours and a flexible schedule.
- Knowledge of and experience in standard stage production practices is required.
- Demonstrated scenic painting experience is required.

- Rustic Living: You’ll be living in a dorm or nature cabin setting, surrounded by the beauty of northern Michigan. Wi-Fi and air conditioning are not provided in the nature cabins, encouraging a true disconnect from the digital world and a deeper connection with nature and those around you.
- Embrace the Outdoors: The camp is nestled in a wilderness area, so expect to encounter wildlife and insects as part of the experience. Embracing the natural environment is key to enjoying your time here.
- Outdoor Work Environment: Many of your duties will involve working outdoors, often for extended periods, so being comfortable in various weather conditions is important.
