This role is responsible for executing the design development and collaborating with the Visual Communications Specialist and reporting to the Visual Communications Manager. The position is responsible for producing visual content that communicates key messages to residents, stakeholders, and visitors. The ideal candidate will have six years of experience in graphic design and be able to craft visually compelling materials that engage and inform diverse audiences. As part of a dynamic team, the Visual Communications Designer will play a crucial role in enhancing the City's image, promoting community engagement, and supporting the effective dissemination of City initiatives.

The Visual Communications Designer ensures complete and thorough knowledge of total history and changes on projects and ensures that job status and history are effectively communicated to the Visual Communications Manager, stakeholders, and members of the project team.

DESIGN: PRINT/TRADITIONAL MEDIA

Utilizes industry standard design software like InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, CAD, PowerPoint, Canva.

Creates high-quality visual content, including graphics, infographics, presentations, and other digital assets for use across the City’s communication channels (social media, website, email newsletters, printed materials including MB Magazine).

Works alongside the Visual Communication Specialist to plan and create original collateral, typesetting, digital printing, digital imaging, and graphic production, via the creative direction of the Visual Communications Manager.

Maintains up-to-date knowledge in the visual communication field.

BRANDING:

Manages quality-control and design consistency of the Miami Beach brand across all collateral.

Implements the Miami Beach brand accurately in the designing of all internal and external communications.

Uses knowledge learned to understand how City departments come to life as sub-brands of the larger Miami Beach brand.

MARKETING:

Meets with project managers to understand overall creative briefs and produce design concepts which could include print advertisements, digital assets, OoH, brochures/guides, etc.

Self-manages all aspects of creative projects from inception to completion and provides real-time updates to stakeholders to ensure timelines are kept.

Must have comprehension of various marketing strategies (digital, social, out of home) to implement creative campaigns for maximum effectiveness.

Makes suggestions to creative design that remains in line with the proposed budget and timelines.

DESIGN: WEB/NON-TRADITIONAL MEDIA

Consults with and designs the visual requirements of the City's website in conjunction with the Marketing team and IT Department.

Creates design elements for websites including social media ads and collateral.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Responsible for capturing photographic content at various City events, as well as headshots.

Ability to work outside regular office hours to attend events, press conferences, ribbon cuttings in order to capture photographic content.

Experience with capturing clear, dynamic content for multiple platforms (digital, social, print):

Organize, capture, and edit photographic content.

Ability to maintain photography equipment.

Extensive experience with editing and retouching digital imagery.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a communication or design-related area of study. Equivalent work experience can be substituted in place of education.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of professional experience.
  • Proven experience with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects).
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in graphic design, branding, and multimedia content creation.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Proficiency in Photography is required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone, electronic mail, and personal contact.
  • Physical capability to create and deliver effective visual designs and effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment, such as, but not limited to, computer, calculator, copier, fax machine, camera, graphic design software, and scanner.
  • No significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, or kneeling.
  • Must be able to work in a high-stress environment and work demanding hours and be available to work outside regular office hours when needed.
