The City of High Point is currently seeking a Children’s Division: FT Library Associate Outreach that performs responsible para-professional work and simple professional work planning and implementing programs and services of the Children’s Services Division of the Public Library. Work involves bringing children and their parents and teachers together with books and information through reference work, programs, etc.; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision, but requires a high degree of personal accountability, motivation, communication, and record keeping.

Responsibilities

  • Drives city vehicles including the bookmobile to agency sites.
  • Acts as a liaison to agency sites.
  • Coordinates, collaborates, and partners with the library outreach team to create a calendar and schedule to support agency sites.
  • Coordinates with the library outreach team to represent the library at community outreach events.
  • Plans and conducts programs at agency sites by providing book deposits and other materials.
  • Keeps meticulous logs from deposit locations to ensure catalog materials are accurate and up to date.
  • Plans and conducts programs at agency sites including seasonal programs, story times, crafts, book clubs, reading contests, family literacy training, site literacy training, and others.
  • Invites agencies to the library for seasonal programs, story times, crafts, tours, fieldtrips, family literacy training, site literacy training, and others.
  • Pursues, maintains, and grows partnerships with agency sites.
  • Acts as public relations representative to the community for public schools, private schools, homeschool groups, businesses, and other city entities.
  • Collaborates with other library and city departments to achieve the Library’s mission and values.
  • Pursues professional development and growth to stay current with technology and library trends.
  • Performs general reference and reader's advisory work at the children’s main reference desk.
  • Assists the division with the main collection through checking in and out materials, straightening books, and checking each assigned shelf location to assure it is in proper classification sequence.
  • Assists in maintenance of the collection through repairing, cleaning, discarding where necessary, and weeding materials based on condition or at managers’ request.
  • Assists in the selection of the Outreach Collection by communicating requests from deposit locations.
  • Assists the division with signature events like Spring Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treat, Summer Jubilee, Holiday Stroll, and others.
  • Assists in supervision of Junior Friends and other children volunteers for summer reading, programs, events, and meetings.
  • Creates displays for promoting programs, literacy, libraries, and seasonal changes.
  • Assists in creating reading lists for grade level, genre, BOB.
  • Prepares flyers digitally and in print for promoting programs, literacy, libraries, and seasonal changes.
  • Assists in ordering and receiving supplies and equipment necessary for programs.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
  • Assists in special projects at managers' requests.

Required Qualifications

  • Associates or bachelor’s in early childhood education or similar degree.
  • Must have possession of an appropriate and valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina or must be eligible for one.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with children in a professional setting.
  • Experience working in a library, daycare, school, or similar setting.
  • MLIS from an ALA accredited Institution.

Physical Requirements

  • Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens, and applicants.
  • Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position.
  • Physical Strength – degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include light work.

Mental Activity/Requirements

  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking combined with knowledge of principles and practices of public personnel and employment laws to work tasks.

Environmental Conditions

  • The Human Resources Analyst is subject to working inside or outdoors.
