The California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) Enterprise Solutions Development Division (ESDD) is seeking a student assistant in the User Experience and Information Design (UXID) Unit. The ESDD provides the infrastructure and application services for most of the business functions within CalPERS and its Regional Offices. The ESDD collaborates with other divisions to meet the business needs by providing quality, innovative, and sustainable services for business continuity. The UXID Unit provides a variety of user research services, user experience design, and usability testing to the CalPERS enterprise. The primary focus of the unit is to ensure that CalPERS websites, web applications, and self-service applications provide our customers with experiences that meet their needs, are designed from a user-centric perspective, and are consistent with industry best practices.

Employment

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.

UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.

UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.

Prerequisites

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.

Work Schedule

Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.

Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Information technology concepts and practices. Principles to provide a foundation for technology related work.

Ability to:

Perform research and data gathering. Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience. Utilize reporting tools to develop and analyze statistical reports. Interpret and explain technical information to non-technical individuals. Interpret customer requests to meet service needs and resolve problems. Provide customer service. Work cooperatively with staff at all levels. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and maintain effectiveness in varying responsibilities and changing priorities. Proficiently use computers and productivity software. Understand and align technology proposals with business needs. Maintain consistent attendance. Demonstrate punctuality, initiative, and dependability. Model and support CalPERS Core Values.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to analyze information and situations, identify and solve problems, and draw effective conclusions. Develop effective and innovative solutions. Apply creative thinking in the user interface design of information technology systems. Knowledge of Graphic Design, Visual Design, or Human Computer Interaction. Knowledge and/or experience with Figma, or user experience design software. Experience working in graphic design, user experience design, or interaction design. Knowledge of web accessibility as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 Guidelines. Duties and Responsibilities

Works collaboratively with user experience designers and is mentored to work in a team to build the skills needed to support the CalPERS website projects and activities. Provides support for user research and usability studies, including conducting analysis, preparing surveys, maintaining notes, and preparing other usability testing documents. Assists user experience designers in various activities, with guidance, on creating sketches, wireframes, and visual designs. Provides support in maintaining consistent design documentation. Aids in user research and design by obtaining website metrics from Google Analytics, analyzing user feedback from surveys and online comment forms, compiling results for user experience designers, and researching best practices. Participates on project teams, and with close supervision, works with Information Technology Services Branch (ITSB) staff and client division stakeholders. Reports on status of projects and work requests to team leads and management both orally and in writing. Attends meetings, takes notes, and updates ITSB content and documents on the CalPERS website.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a hybrid environment.

Hybrid work schedule will be 2 days remote, 3 days in office.

Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
