Description
LAC Federal is seeking an experienced Special Collections Librarian to support a project with a prestigious federal library in Beltsville, Maryland. The Special Collections Librarian will be responsible for the management, preservation, and promotion of the library's special collections. This is a long-term, full-time, on-site (40 hours a week; Monday to Friday) benefited contract opportunity.
Responsibilities
- Assess condition of materials and initiate repairs and/or digitization where needed
- Assess potential donations to collection and recommend whether to accept
- Prepare documents needed to transfer or add collection materials and update collection administrative files to reflect changes/additions
- Accession new materials into the collection and update finding aids to reflect additions
- Monitor and report on collection usage through anecdotes and measures
- Prepare for and participate in tours and outreach; create displays of representative items from the collection and associated talking points
- Prepare physical materials for digitization; coordinate production of in-house and external digitization; and collaborate with digital archivists to preserve and present the digitized content
- Ability to lift and move books and manuscript boxes, to climb ladders to retrieve materials, and push book trucks
- Organize, describe and create/update finding aids for unprocessed subsets of the collection
- Create ArchivesSpace records for items in unprocessed subsets of the collection
- Answer customer information inquiries regarding collection materials
- Add new content to web archiving of client websites as needed
- Develop curatorial strategy for licensed materials
- Develop advertising policy for the client collection as the official repository
Requirements
- MLS from an ALA-accredited institution with a focus on archives, special collections, or a related field
- At least two years of experience working with special collections materials in a library, archives, or museum setting
- Knowledge of archival principles, standards, and best practices for processing, description, and preservation of special collections materials
- Familiarity with metadata standards and tools, such as EAD and MARC
- Experience with digitization and digital preservation of special collections materials
- Strong research and reference skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Familiarity with library management systems and digital asset management systems
- Ability to pass a background check
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to move from place to place within the location, lifting of items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasional up to 35 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork
