We are seeking a Library Assistant, who will play a crucial role in supporting our mission by providing efficient and effective assistance to our library patrons. You must be a detail-oriented and customer-focused individual who is passionate about promoting academic excellence through access to knowledge and information.

The Library Assistant will report to the Director of Library & LRC and be solely responsible for assisting the library’s users and keeping the library operational for the evening and weekend shifts.

Hourly Pay Rate: $22 per hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greet and welcome library patrons in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Assist patrons with locating and accessing library resources, including books, journals, databases, and other materials.
  • Oversee the operations of the circulation desk during the evening/night shift, ensuring library policies are adhered to by users.
  • Ensure library users check in upon arrival to the library and monitor student use of the library.
  • Register patrons in the ILS library system, ensuring the information is accurate.
  • Assist with printing posters, ensuring they are printed promptly.
  • Maintain specific LibGuides, updating at least once per month.
  • Process print and electronic books using the NLM classification system (as applicable) in a timely manner.
  • Work with the Electronic Resources Librarian to help maintain electronic journals.
  • Create fliers to market library activities, programming, and resources.
  • Work with the Acquisitions Coordinator to assist in creating and disseminating library materials.
  • Assist the Library Director with compiling statistics and data from various sources.
  • Maintain the organization and cleanliness of the library, including shelving books and restocking supplies.
  • Provide exemplary customer service by answering questions, resolving issues, and addressing concerns promptly and efficiently.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and training sessions to stay updated on library policies, procedures, and services.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with coursework emphasis in Libraries or related fields.

EXPERIENCE:

  • College courses in Library Technology or Library Science or equivalent work experience.
  • 1-2 years of experience in the library performing general library tasks or customer service experience.
  • Working knowledge of data visualization tools such as Canva, Microsoft Suite, etc.

SKILLS and Qualifications:

  • Strong communication, organization, study, and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with reference ticketing software programs (LibAnswers) and discovery and access control systems.
  • Ability to prioritize work in a unit that receives time-sensitive, high-volume requests.
  • Excellent general clerical skills and the ability to keep detailed records with great accuracy.
  • PC proficient with working knowledge of PowerPoint, Access, and Word.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal skills, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.

COMPLEXITY:

  • The ability to perform highly detailed work with sustained attention and care while providing/obtaining information on numerous inquiries is paramount to success in this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Occasional stooping. Frequent standing. Constant walking, sitting, climbing, reaching high/low levels, finger movement, feeling, speaking clearly, hearing conversationally, and seeing far and near.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The position is on-site unless specific authorization from the manager.
  • Occasionally required to work in confined spaces.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequent variety of unrelated tasks. Constant calculating, interrupted work, a variety of interrelated tasks, and use of sustained concentration, reasoning, judgment, resourcefulness, analytical ability, and ingenuity.
