Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The primary purpose of the G. R. Little Library is to provide the intellectual growth resources necessary for the instructions and research needs of the students, faculty, staff and administrators of Elizabeth City State University. The mission of the library is to provide materials (print, non-print, as well as on-line databases) and services in support of educational programs of the university and, where possible, the educational needs of the Elizabeth City community.

Description of Work

The Director of Library Services manages the staff, operations and services of the G.R. Little Library. This position plays a major role in the University’s strategic planning for academic and administrative resources, technologies and services. The position is responsible for developing and managing an integrated service environment for the functions of Circulation, Acquisitions, Media, Reference, Serials, Information Literacy, Distance Learning, Cataloging and Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery. The position has the responsibility of developing departmental goals and objectives, preparing budget requests, managing budget allocations, and participating actively in library-wide planning processes.

Possess the knowledge and skills to manage a university library and provide effective management leadership. Communicate effectively with businesses, vendors, faculty, staff, and the general public. Possess a knowledge of and ability to employ good public relations techniques. Effectively collaborate with faculty and students. Lead and excel in a team environment. Demonstrate a record of ongoing professional development.

Minimum Training and Experience

ALA accredited Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library Information Science (MLIS) required. Doctorate from an accredited institution preferred. A minimum of five years of professional experience combined with equivalent administrative experience also preferred.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
