VISTA Communication and Outreach Specialist

Kingdom Community Development Corporation (KCDC) is a HUD-certified nonprofit organization whose programs focus on improving the financial health of low-to-moderate-income (LMI) populations. Our services – which are funded through grants, contracts and charitable donations - are free to participants. KCDC’s financial literacy education, first-time homeowner assistance, and projects that add housing resources in targeted communities help to increase the number of African-Americans first-time homeowners. Homeownership is a key building block to building family wealth, an area in which minority communities face disparities. KCDC’s community development initiatives help to create safe, affordable homes for LMI communities. We partner with organizations and employers to provide targeted populations with services that use research-based responses to create family wealth, improve the safety and viability of communities, and add to the infrastructure and tax base of municipalities.

Effective communication and outreach are integral for widespread outreach that increases public awareness of the resources available to families and communities for housing, financial growth, and community development. KCDC must reach a wider audience of those who will benefit from our programs if we, and the communities we serve, are to realize significant impact. Through a strategic process of assessment and development, our VISTA project will improve the effectiveness of our communication and outreach practices, which, in turn, will increase our capacity to reach more people and raise public awareness of our mission.

Member Duties: The VISTA will identify, review and analyze KCDC’s current communication practices and resources, complete assessments, and develop reports to support the mission of KCDC. The VISTA will create a strategic plan that provides guidance on best practices for effective communication and outreach. The VISTA will create communication and outreach materials, strengthen information technology, including social media and Internet presence, and build a library of resources and assets. The VISTA will research best practices for communication and outreach, including a review of the effective practices used by other community development and housing organizations. The VISTA will develop a report that includes all findings, including examples of approaches and materials.
