Broadcast Engineer

General Job Description:

ABC57 and the CW25 in South Bend, Indiana have an immediate opening for a full-time Broadcast Maintenance Engineer to join our growing office! Home to Michiana’s most decorated newscasts, we are looking for an eager problem-solver. Ideal candidates will have previous broadcast or IT support experience with ability to perform basic maintenance of vehicles and building systems.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Perform maintenance and emergency repairs of newsroom production equipment including cameras, video editors, audio mixers, lighting, and mobile video transmitters (such as Dejero or TVu). You will be working with an award-winning news team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Monitor live newscasts and assist with technical issues. No day will be the same and you will work in the production control room and occasionally on remote broadcasts with your colleagues.

Fix problems with staff computers. You’ll work with our IT department to fix laptops, monitors, printers, and networking issues.

Document equipment operation and create standard operating procedures. You will provide valuable technical guidance to our reporters, directors, and editors.

Update broadcast system wiring and diagrams. You will help solve problems faster by ensuring equipment wiring is setup and properly documented.

Maintain our company vehicles. Schedule maintenance and repairs as needed. You will make sure our company cars are safe and operating properly.

Provide basic building maintenance investigating problems with air conditioning, heating, and electrical. Schedule appropriate repairs when necessary. You will ensure our building is an enjoyable and safe place to work.

Innovate. You will help us explore and engage with emerging media technology.

Other duties, as assigned. This position requires some on-call time. Occasionally the position will require weekend work.

Requirements:

Previous experience with broadcast technology; evaluating and repairing cameras, lights, microphones, tripods, and monitors.

Must be able to use a variety of broadcast equipment including but not limited to digital video cameras, computer graphics systems, non-linear video editors, video switchers, audio mixers, control room automation, and satellite receivers. Specific experience with iNews, Grass Valley Ignite, Grass Valley Stratus, Ross Xpression, TVu, and Dejero is a strong plus, but we will train the right candidate.

Understanding of good vehicle and building maintenance.

Good organization, attention to detail, and proactivity.

The ideal candidate must be a self-starter and have a great attitude.

Must be able to communicate effectively and work independently.

Ability to guide, coach, and train colleagues.

Must be able to comprehend schematics, mechanical drawings and technical manuals and documents. Pulling and building cables including BNC, XLR, and Ethernet cable will be required. We will train the right candidate.
