Summary of Position

Position Overview This position is seeking a self-motivated individual who is looking for significant, meaningful GIS experience to join our Community Development team. The GIS Intern will work closely with our GIS Specialist to assist in various mapping, analysis, and data management tasks. This position offers a valuable opportunity to experience a wide range of GIS applications throughout the City. The internship is a temporary position and will last approximately 3-5 months. Expected Hours of Work Hours are typically Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. This temporary internship position has a maximum term of 500 hours. Hours are flexible and based on schedule and availability. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform these essential functions: Perform data collection and data entry responsibilities in the field and in the office, related to the City's base map layers, updating data, layers, maps and record drawings. Prepare exhibits, tables, maps, and visual aids for internal and external stakeholders. Assist in creation, maintenance, and updating GIS databases and maps. Recommend and assist in development of methods and techniques to improve effectiveness and productivity of GIS applications. Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications A post-secondary student or graduate with coursework in Geographic Information Science, Geography, Planning, Surveying, or related field. Completed course requirements in Esri ArcGIS, Web GIS, Surveying and the Global Positioning System, Spatial Databases, or similar coursework. Valid Driver's License Ability to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. Desired Qualifications Experience working with Esri ArcGIS. Experience with database management. Experience with GPS data collection. Experience reading and interpreting engineering plans and drawings. Work Environment & Physical Demands Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors. Employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Employee may be subject to working near traffic and to noise in the presence of heavy construction equipment, but generally free from additional work hazards. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

Regularly read and interpret documents and other written material. Regularly communicate and exchange information with others in person, over the telephone, and using written communication methods. Regularly operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer, and telephone, as well as equipment/tools commonly found in GIS. Frequently remain in a stationary position and regularly move within the building to attend meetings and access files and office machinery. Occasionally travel around the City to meetings or events, operating City vehicles as needed. Occasionally move or transport items weighing up to 25 pounds.
