The Society for Ecological Restoration is a US-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization with more than 5,000 members in 130+ countries. The society consists of 16 regional chapters, 3 thematic sections, and more than 25 student associations. The Society’s mission is to advance the science, practice, and policy of ecological restoration to sustain biodiversity, improve resilience in a changing climate, and re-establish an ecologically healthy relationship between nature and culture. As SER serves a global network of restorationists, the Membership and Marketing Director’s core role is building, maintaining, and supporting the membership base. The Membership and Marketing Director is responsible for: driving growth and expansion of SER’s membership, elevating the organization’s brand to new audiences, communicating a clear value proposition that builds strong and long-lasting relationships with stakeholders, and managing the overall department including overseeing, mentoring, recruiting, and supporting the Membership and Marketing team. The Membership and Marketing Director will interact with people from all walks of life and from across the world as we work together to repair damaged ecosystems and restore a healthy planet for people and nature. This is a full-time, remote position reporting to the Associate Director. Primary Responsibilities of the Membership and Marketing Director MEMBERSHIP Oversee overall strategic and operational responsibility for SER’s membership operations, including member recruitment and retention, setting and meeting membership growth objectives (e.g., increasing membership by 50% in 3 years, by 100% in 5 years), and articulating and enhancing member value/services. Develop and implement dedicated member acquisition campaigns and member win-back campaigns for lapsed members. Coordinate with SER Programs staff to enhance membership value and the overall membership experience. Serve as the primary liaison between SER and its chapters, sections and student associations, facilitate the flow of information among and between these components and SER, respond to inquiries, provide consultative and management support, troubleshoot issues and strengthen the relationship between SER and its components. Ensure a smooth, efficient, and effective overall membership experience (e.g. joining, renewals, member value, effective use of the membership database, providing exemplary customer service). Provide regular membership reports to the board and staff including recommending and collecting key performance indicators as well as maintaining historical trends analysis. MARKETING Provide overall strategic and operational leadership for marketing efforts targeted to various audiences, including members, nonmembers, the industry, and the public. Ensure accurate, consistent messaging in marketing initiatives to advance SER’s mission, membership, and strategic goals. Bring together the varied goals of key internal partners and components to drive progress toward a unified marketing and communications strategy for SER world conferences and other programs. DEPARTMENTAL MANAGEMENT Lead membership and marketing team, including recruitment and onboarding of new departmental staff. Motivate and mentor staff, develop/oversee standard operating procedures, oversee development and implementation of coordinated team work plans. Establish performance metrics, assess strengths and areas for improvement among Membership and Marketing team members. Promote a culture of improvement and leadership development, provide opportunities for training and growth. Secondary Responsibilities of the Membership Director Other activities as needed and defined by the Associate Director. Required Qualifications Minimum of Bachelor’s degree; Advanced degree preferred. Minimum of 10 years of experience in membership, marketing, or development. Minimum 5 years experience as a manager/supervisor. Demonstrated experience providing positive and proactive customer service, including awareness and ability to manage cultural sensitivities and differences. Demonstrated experience driving and achieving revenue and business results. Progressive experience overseeing marketing cycle including strategy, development and branding, target audiences, sales and revenue generation. Capacity to work well with competing priorities and tight deadlines that require a high degree of independent action with minimal supervision/multiple project leaders. Track record of driving successful internal and external marketing for organizations. Analytical skills, with the ability to tailor messaging for diverse audiences. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships. Experience managing/maintaining membership database software. Proficient in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), relational database, project management, content management systems, learning management systems, and communication and marketing automation tools. Effective and approachable problem-solver who addresses challenges with a solution-oriented and creative perspective. Ability to coordinate international/fully remote teams and collaborations. Flexibility to participate in early morning or evening meetings (due to international time zone planning) and to travel. Preferred Qualifications Interest in the natural or environmental sciences, preferably in ecological restoration. Experience working for a scientific organization. Experience coordinating marketing and member services for meetings, conferences, and VIP events, especially international events and with global representation.
