Job Summary:
The Equipment Designer will design, troubleshoot, and seek opportunities for continuous improvement and innovation of proprietary equipment for the installation and operation of Direct Reduced Iron making plants and new technology initiatives.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Use CAD software to create mechanical drawings for both basic and detailed engineering of steel plants.
- Demonstrate proficiency in Inventor, AutoCAD, and other Autodesk products.
- Translate conceptual designs, sketches, and ideas from engineers and designers into detailed, complete engineering drawing packages suitable for purchasing, fabrication, field erection, and design analysis.
- Conduct site visits to plant locations to analyze existing equipment, ducting routes, and layouts to inform future designs and proposals.
- Travel to fabrication facilities to inspect mechanical equipment, conduct testing, and ensure adherence to design specifications and tolerances.
- Participate in business trips and field assignments as required to support departmental tasks and functions.
- Review mechanical equipment drawings to ensure consistency with conceptual designs, sketches, and engineering requirements.
- Provide design suggestions to senior engineers and designers for potential improvements to enhance the final product.
- Contribute to project documentation, including requisitions, specifications, quality documents, and operation & maintenance manuals.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams across the company, building consensus and finding solutions that benefit all stakeholders.
Skills & Abilities:
Required:
- Advanced computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and Autodesk software.
- Expertise in AutoCAD, Inventor, or equivalent CAD software.
- Strong technical writing and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks while adhering to deadlines and schedules.
Preferred:
- Advanced 3D modeling skills and experience with Vault.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and creating engineering lists.
- Basic understanding of mechanical and system calculations.
- Experience coordinating design schedules with engineers.
- Familiarity with P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) for equipment design and system checks.
- International travel experience.
- Prior experience working in industrial plant environments.
- Willingness to stay at plant sites for extended periods as required.
Education & Experience:
- Associate’s degree in a mechanical discipline or a minimum of five (5) years of hands-on experience in a technical environment.
Travel Requirements:
- 10% - 30% travel (both international and domestic), depending on project demands, with potential for more travel during specific project phases.
