Starting at $23.00 - $30.00/hour

The Troy Public Library is the hub of the vibrant, dynamic, and diverse City of Troy. The Library sees over 600,000 visitors per year and serves an educated and involved community. The Bookmobile's mission is to provide library services to patrons who are unable to visit the building due to illness or injury, age or disability, or lack of time or access to transportation. Under the direction of the Head of Community Engagement, Community Engagement librarians perform a variety of professional and public service tasks in order to support Bookmobile services in the City. This may include readers' advisory, reference, programming, and driving the bus from stop to stop.


DUTIES

  • Assist Bookmobile patrons by locating materials, placing holds, checking items out and in, and managing patron records.
  • Provide friendly and comprehensive readers' advisory for patrons of all ages.
  • Assist with Bookmobile programming for patrons of all ages, including story time programming at daycares and preschools.
  • Drive Bookmobile to various locations throughout Troy according to established route and schedule.
  • Present a positive, professional, and friendly face to all members of the community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master of Library Science degree from a library school accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Eagerness to work with the public and serve patrons of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
  • Ability to travel around the community, loading and unloading materials and equipment in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, ice and wind.
  • Ability to drive a large van using good judgment and safe driving skills.
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public, library staff, library volunteers, and other City departments.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, dynamic, fast-paced environment, using excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information in an appropriate and secure manner.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good critical thinking skills while representing the library in the community.
  • Demonstrated computer skills using Microsoft Office, e-reader technology, social media, internet, and email.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record (based on City of Troy standards). Out of state applicants must provide current driving record at time of application and obtain State of Michigan license within one (1) month of appointment.
  • As a condition of employment, will be required to obtain a Chauffeur License and Medical Card as required by the State of Michigan by date of hire.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen (including marijuana).

PREFERENCES

  • Recent public library experience.
  • Recent experience providing story time programming for children.
  • Experience with community engagement or outreach services, especially with a diverse population.
  • Current Chauffeur License.
  • Knowledge of Polaris Integrated Library System

HOURS

  • As needed; 0-20 hours per week including day, evening, and weekend (Saturday and Sunday) shifts.
