About the Role

The live event and production technical director works with sales producers, production managers, creative directors, media producers, designers, other crew, and clients to lead the coordination and execution of flawless projects. Additional responsibilities include leading all aspects of technical project management, pre-production services, logistical planning, and on-site management of events. In conjunction with the production manager, the technical director helps prepare budget estimates, diagrams that include rigging and renderings; and technical recommendations and specifications. The technical director is responsible for fulfillment of vendor and labor coordination, troubleshooting throughout the pre-production and production phases, and managing the overall success and provided budget of assigned events. The scope of responsibility for this role is very wide and requires thorough knowledge of all company processes. National and international travel are required.


Key Responsibilities

  • Self Starter in the development of technical deliverables, management of timelines, and facilitation of all technical aspects of workflow
  • Working in conjunction with design department, creation and maintenance of accurate technical, client, and venue drawings
  • Creation of detailed RFPs for vendors with complete descriptions of how the equipment is to be used
  • Acquisition of required labor via unions, labor brokers and individual contractors as needed for each project working through production support department
  • Creation of detailed production schedules
  • Initiation of quality control procedures throughout the entire project process
  • Articulate in communication with the venue, and management of on-site activities
  • Management of a project’s technical aspects, including pre-production and on-site execution
  • Flawless execution and maximized gross profit through creative and cost-effective solutions in line with the approved budget and the expected profit margin
  • Proactive sales of revenue-generating solutions to clients
  • Set strategic long and short term goals



Qualifications

  • 7+ years in a production company, marketing firm, creative agency, or relevant AV role
  • Management experience desirable, including budget and financial management, team leadership, employee development, cross-organization collaboration
  • Leadership experience in show production with a show-must-go-on attitude (theater or live music productions preferred)
  • Management style focused on leading processes rather than managing people
  • Sociable people person who is able to handle time pressure and change
  • Ability to work as part of a creative team
  • Passion for the work, and pride in a job well done
  • Proactive and independent in a self-managed, project-based environment
  • Effective communication and facilitation skills
  • Comprehensive, big-picture understanding as well as a grasp of fine details
  • Thorough understanding of and design experience with structural and mechanical construction for the stage, including materials, techniques, and rigging; carpentry experience preferred
  • Microsoft Office experience required (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc)
  • Familiarity with Google Docs
  • Proficiency in Vectorworks and/or AutoCAD
  • ETCP Certified preferred
