Adult Services Manager (Librarian II)
Full-Time (40 Hours a Week) – Barrett Library

The Alexandria Library is looking for an enthusiastic individual to lead its Adult Services team. The ideal candidate will have exceptional customer service skills and the desire to contribute to a busy, main library. Under the direction of the Barrett Library Manager, this position is responsible for supervising the activities of the Adult Services Department, including Interlibrary Loan, training and evaluating personnel, developing technology initiatives, planning programs, collection development and a variety of duties that require a thorough knowledge of adult services.

Management Duties:

  1. Provides leadership for the Barrett Adult Services, to include planning and coordinating initiatives and services on system-wide teams and committees.
  2. Works as a member of the Barrett Library management team and submits information and statistics to the Barrett Library Manager for monthly and annual reports.
  3. Directs and coordinates the activities of the Adult Services Department by formulating goals, plans, procedures, priorities, and schedules.
  4. Hires, trains, and evaluates staff within the Adult Services Department at the Barrett Library.
  5. Assists customers with requests for information and library materials.
  6. Instructs customers on the use of the library’s online, digital and print resources.
  7. In collaboration with the Barrett Library Manager, coordinates collection development and maintenance for Barrett Library’s circulating and reference collections.
  8. Monitors equipment, such as computers, photocopiers, and printers and requests service as needed.
  9. Stays aware of professional trends and continually works to improve adult services.
  10. Becomes a passport processing agent and assists in passport processing.
  11. Coordinates programs for adults in order to encourage usage of library materials and services.
  12. Creates displays to enhance the library experience and promote use of library resources.
  13. Maintains collaborative partnerships with City agencies, community groups, arts organizations and professional library groups.
  14. Assists with grant writing for Adult Services initiatives and researches inter-government and foundation assistance to secure support for library programs.
  15. Attends conferences, workshops, and meetings and stays up-to-date with emerging technologies.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Comprehensive knowledge of information resources and adult services.
  2. Management and supervisory skills, including team building, time management, and planning.
  3. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  4. Extensive knowledge of technology including digital services, integrated library systems, and online databases.
  5. Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing library environment.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff.
  7. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  8. Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public, with the library’s business contacts, and with other staff.

Minimum Requirements: Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited school; experience at the level of Librarian I; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; supervisory experience preferred. Applicant must possess or obtain, within 3 months of hire, a license to practice as a registered professional librarian by the Commonwealth of Virginia. US Citizenship is required for passport services.

Salary: $62,719.28 - $110,373.64 Annually

Schedule: Hours are scheduled to meet the staffing needs of the library, and will include days, evenings, every other Saturday, and occasional Sundays at the Barrett Central Library.
