Job Summary

PIC Group is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Technical Writer to join our team. While this is a remote position, we strongly prefer candidates based in the Southeast U.S. to facilitate occasional travel and alignment with project needs. The Technical Writer is responsible for generating technical documentation across a wide range of industrial equipment and systems. The Technical Writer reports to the Project Manager and will research, organize, and produce technical documents that follow PIC Group’s methodology, philosophy, and standards. The Technical Writer is an integral part of a team that delivers support documentation to construction, commissioning, and operations personnel and is responsible for performing field validation and quality checks against as-built systems and equipment. The Technical Writer has a strong technical background and is proficient with the use of various software platforms that are leveraged when developing complex procedures, diagrams, and technical materials for use in the field to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, build, or repair equipment and systems. The Technical Writer will work independently and possess solid communication skills for coordination with clients, manage project document creation, and lead regular meetings with key stakeholders.


This position will require occasional travel to client sites.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Write technical documents for power plants including installation, start-up, operating and maintenance procedures, and manuals.
  2. Research and collect data through engineering documentation, drawings, and other pertinent available source data.
  3. Under supervision, help maintain and adhere to procedure revision guidelines, procedure standards, and procedure writing guidelines.
  4. Interview engineering, marketing, manufacturing, customer services, and other project team members for information.
  5. Select photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material.
  6. Organize material and complete writing assignment according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  7. Draw in field sketches to illustrate specified system layout.
  8. Maintain records and files of work and revisions.
  9. Maintain Technical Library, including gathering and sorting source and background materials.
  10. Review published materials and revisions for changes in scope, format, and content.
  11. Analyze developments in specific field to determine need for revisions in previously published materials and development of new material.
  12. Perform On-Site Plant Reviews and System Walkdowns.

Job Requirements

  1. Strong working knowledge and ability to read blueprints, schematics, and interpret Engineering documents: Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID’s), Electrical One-Lines, Product Manuals, etc.
  2. Proficient across various disciplines of mechanical, electrical, and controls with a wide degree of project ownership and flexibility is required.
  3. Skilled in technical writing and use of Microsoft Suites when developing technical materials.
  4. Ability to work as a project team member, working with other technical writers, editors, and illustrators as required.
  5. Attention to detail and strong written communications skills. Word processing skills are essential for the successful candidate.
  6. Ability to independently research, develop, and review new procedures and changes to existing procedures.
  7. Ability to simplify moderate to complex technical topics for lay audiences.

Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to work at Desk for extended periods of time.
  2. Ability to perform system walkdowns at Client facility, including climbing stairs and wearing proper personal protective equipment.

Education / Experience

  1. High School Diploma or GED with 4 years military training, preferably navy nuclear.
  2. 2+ years of operational experience in heavy industrial or power generation is required.
  3. 2+ years of experience in technical writing and the use of Microsoft Suite for technical writing applications.
  4. Degreed Engineer, PMP Certified, or a degree in business administration is a plus.
  5. Experience in the use of technical writing software applications such as AutoCAD is a plus.
