Part time 36 hours/week | Variable
This position will coordinate incoming requests for routine and emergency air and ground transport services. Responsible for managing, as part of a team, multiple rotor-wing, fixed-wing, and ground ambulance assets. Coordinates appropriate asset response by utilizing computer-aided dispatch (CAD) software to determine the closest appropriate resource and will alert that team using various radio and telephone systems. Afterwards, the Communications Specialist will track the asset's progress throughout the mission and provide any support necessary to complete the mission successfully. The Communications Specialist will also field, as part of a team, patient advisory reports for all EMS units transporting patients into the UF Health Shands System. This position will also field activation requests for all emergency hospital alerts, including stroke/STEMI/trauma alerts, from various internal and external clinical decision-makers. The ideal candidate for this position will be able to work well under pressure and remain calm. A higher than average attention to detail is required. The ideal candidate will be able to multitask while maintaining a sharp focus on all aircraft while in flight. The Communications Specialist will be required to undergo mandatory Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) crew resource management and flight emergency training. This position is subject to all Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services (CAMTS) standards on Communications Specialists.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent. Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred. Functional understanding of communications equipment including telephone, radio, and recording equipment. Knowledge of navigational terms is preferred, but not required. One year of dispatching experience in an EMS/911/Aviation work environment, or one year of work experience in a 911 or hospital environment is preferred.
Motor Vehicle Operator Designation: Employees in this position will not operate vehicles for an assigned business purpose.
Licensure/Certification/Registration: One of the following:
- Current Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD)
- Florida 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator
- Florida EMT-Basic
- Florida Paramedic certification is required.
International Association of Medical Transport Communication Specialists (IAMTCS) Certified Flight Communications Specialist certification is required within one year of hire.
