Job Title: Design Manager

Reporting To: Senior Management

Responsible For: Producing custom mechanical designs and managing a team of designers for a variety of customers

Job Purpose: To ensure that the design team produces quality designs and drawings that meet established budgets and timelines for client needs

Salary: Based on experience: Estimated $94,000 to $135,000+

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create CAD models in SolidWorks and/or Tekla to produce high-quality product designs
  • Produce and/or ensure production of detailed manufacturing shop drawings in SolidWorks and/or Tekla
  • Verify designs are buildable and drawings are readable by working closely with production team to understand production capabilities
  • Provide design improvements for commonly used parts and features to increase functionality and/or decrease manufacturing costs
  • Manage project schedules and ensure timely completion
  • Maintain design standards that comply with ISO9001 and AISC procedures
  • Ensure compliance with contract requirements
  • Facilitate budget compliance
  • Manage a team of designers

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Must have a solid understanding of mechanical design principles and be able to lead a team by word and in practice. Must be able to communicate clearly with clients/customers including government and non-government personnel in a professional manner. Understand the needs and requirements of the contract. Create buildable drawings according to standardization and describe them in detail. Work well with production staff, construction workers, and different trades.

Qualifications

  • More than two years of experience in a design management/leadership role
  • More than five years of experience as a designer or a similarly applicable position
  • Strong understanding of first principles of engineering
  • Creative problem-solver
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Proficient in designing parts using 3D CAD tools (ex. SolidWorks and/or Tekla software)
  • Proficient in SolidWorks weldments
  • Strong mechanical design aptitude
  • Familiar with metal part fabrication techniques, including machining, cutting, welding, forming, painting, etc.
  • Maintain a collaborative environment between all members of the project group
  • Able to create 2D drawings from 3D models or parts using common drafting standards
  • Able to create large/complex assembly models with multiple sub-assemblies
  • Coordinate/collaborate with others to create new and/or modify existing technical drawings that communicate engineering ideas, designs, and information in support of engineering functions
  • Provide technical expertise to train/develop design team members
  • Able to verify information provided is accurately represented and all industry standards are met
  • Able to perform tolerance analyses on designs
  • Capable of performing Independent Technical Reviews
  • Experience working with metal fabrication
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen test, if hired
  • Able to pass background check needed to enter federal bases
  • Qualified to work in USA

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or relevant technical degree)
  • 5+ years of experience leading/managing design teams
  • Proficient in running finite element analyses (FEA) in SolidWorks
  • Experience working on government-contracted jobs
  • Proficiency with VBA, C++, C# or other similar programming languages

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of designers
  • Manage multiple complex projects at the same time
  • Ensure designs meet manufacturing, technical, certification, and customer requirements
  • Ensure that all design projects are completed on time and within budget
  • Improve processes that will result in an increase of efficiency, safety, and/or profitability within the design team or others
  • Draw, update, and maintain designs and drawings

The ideal candidate will lead a team of technical individuals responsible for executing and leading the full design process from ideation through production. The ideal candidate will also create new designs and update current designs, as needed.
