General Description:
The purpose of this job is to assess, develop, and maintain the reference collection and nonfiction circulating collection.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services.
- Explains and assists in use of reference resources, such as book and periodical indexes, to locate information.
- Advises supervisor of school assignments, seasonal projects, and frequent topics that require special attention.
- Describes or demonstrates procedures for navigating the public access catalog or electronic resources such as CD-ROM databases.
- Answers questions from library users.
- Assists users in accessing and interpreting library resources.
- Selects new book titles for the library.
- Searches files, reference shelves, and computerized information systems to locate requested information.
- Answers queries on complicated reference subjects, including formulating and processing online search requests.
- Participates in library outreach programs and conducts library tours.
- Provides instruction and actively participates in the development and design of classes on use of the library and its resources.
- Performs other duties and related work as instructed and assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
• Requires a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from a University or College accredited by the American Library Association.
• Requires one (1) year of experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Physical Demands:
Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment):
• Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
• Requires South Carolina Public Librarians certification.
