POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Overview
The University of California, Riverside (UCR) Library seeks applications from an innovative, dynamic, and collaborative Metadata Librarian, who will join our user-focused team in developing and implementing creative and sustainable metadata for digital collections that support the University’s world-class research and instruction.

Responsibilities
The Metadata Librarian creates, modifies, and enhances metadata for library resources in all formats (print and non-print) and in multiple languages with the goal of creating accurate and sustainable metadata and metadata workflows. Providing leadership in the design and implementation of library projects in which metadata is an essential component, the Metadata Librarian will train staff, conduct metadata analysis, and coordinate complex resource description.

  1. Coordinates and oversees creation, application, and maintenance of non-MARC descriptive, administrative, structural, and preservation metadata for library resources.
  2. Defines strategies for the creation, harvest, enhancement, remediation, and transformation of metadata, creating best practice guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  3. Ingests, updates, and maintains metadata in the digital asset management system (DAMS).
  4. Contributes to reparative descriptive work for digital and non-digital resources.
  5. Evaluates, recommends, and develops metadata specifications to ensure high quality discoverability of digital resources.
  6. Consults with data providers to establish appropriate parameters for project-based metadata creation.
  7. Analyzes metadata and digital objects originating from various sources for quality, consistency, and completeness.
  8. Identifies and evaluates new technological platforms to support the management, discovery, and display of library digital collections.
  9. Serves as an expert partner for faculty, students, project teams and library colleagues in the selection and implementation of metadata.
  10. Participates in library-wide activities, administrative committees, special projects and library programs.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  1. ALA-accredited Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to the position.
  2. Experience in creating, editing, and transforming digital assets’ metadata in an academic or research library.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of data modeling techniques and awareness of trends and best practices.
  4. Experience working with Dublin Core, EAD, MODS, or other XML-based standards.
  5. Familiarity with MARC transmission standards.
  6. Excellent problem-solving skills in a complex and rapidly changing environment.
  7. Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment.
  8. Effective oral and written communication.

Preferred qualifications

  1. Two or more years of experience as a librarian or in an equivalent professional position.
  2. Familiarity with archival collections, materials, and processes.
