DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Houston Public Library (HPL) is seeking a motivated, flexible, team-oriented person with a passion for customer service to work as a Librarian II (Digitization). Under the direction of the Digi Team Lead, the Digitization Librarian II will work within the Digitization Unit team and collaborate closely with History Research Center archivists and librarians to ensure good adherence to an established digitization project workflow as it relates to the facilitation of quality metadata for digital archival collections. The Digitization Librarian II will also support other Digital Strategies teams as needed.

The Librarian II (Digitization) duties will include:

  • Partners with Digitization Unit teammates and History Research Centers to ensure a smooth digital archival collection upload and management workflow.
  • Works closely with History Research Centers, especially in key areas of established project workflow, including during new project setup and review of completed projects before uploading into the content management system.
  • Works on HPL-specific metadata standards and assists in the development and implementation of best practices, tools, procedures, and workflows.
  • Provides support for Special Projects, including ad hoc metadata creation for HPL Digital Archival collections, including legacy Digital Archival collections.
  • Uses designated software to assist with the creation of transcripts for audiovisual collections.
  • Trains under a supervisor to organize and ensure safe, quality storage of digital archival materials.
  • Assists Division Manager and Digi Team Lead with department-critical work that supports the Houston Public Library Digital Archives (HPLDA) online platforms and collections.
  • Participates in planning and coordination of metadata enhancement and remediation to address better discoveries for library users.
  • Prepares statistical and narrative reports for presentation. Participates in grant processes that involve digital archives, preparing and maintaining necessary grant and project documentation.
  • Assists direct supervisor with responsibilities related to grants, Capital Improvement Plan, and other outside-funded equipment purchases made by or on behalf of the Department, including research, equipment setup, documentation, training, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Actively participates in evaluations and working groups associated with digital archival platforms.
  • Possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft operating system and software. Knowledge of digital media applications and technologies, iOS, and other software as needed.
  • This individual may periodically need to be available to handle emergency calls to provide after-hours assistance for critical issues.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Requires a Master's of Library Science degree from a school accredited by American Library Association (ALA) and one (1) year of library experience.

OR

Requires a Bachelor's degree plus 18 hours toward a Master's of Library Science degree from a school accredited by ALA and two (2) years of library experience. A Master's of Library Science degree must be completed within two (2) years from being hired into this classification.

A valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2) preferred.

  • Ability to plan and organize work and skilled at prioritization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Experience using digital content management platforms such as CONTENTdm.
  • Familiarity with current metadata standards and practices, including XML and Dublin Core.
  • Experience with EBSCO Stacks or similar webpage editing using web-based tools.
  • Experience with transcriptions software.
  • Knowledge of current versions of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
