What You'll Do
The Galaxie Library is currently seeking an energetic, innovative full-time (40 hours per week) Youth Services Librarian with strong customer service skills to develop a broad range of programming for youth from birth through school-age. The person in this role will model and support positive caregiver/child interaction, and reach out to build relationships with families, schools, and youth-focused organizations in a diverse community. This work involves engaging the community to understand cultural values, trends and needs and how these influence library services to youth in the Apple Valley community.
All Dakota County Librarians provide information services, reading suggestions, and research services to assist library customers of all ages in finding information. The Librarian will assist the public in the use of digital resources and provide technology instruction. Librarians engage with people inside the library and out in the community to promote library services and print/digital resources through the development and delivery of programs, community outreach to target audiences, and public relations. The person in this role may be responsible for collection management and resource recommendation for assigned collection areas. The librarian works under the supervision of a Branch Manager.

Minimum Requirements:
- Master's Degree in Library and Information Science
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 1 year public library experience
- Experience integrating community needs and interests into effective library services and programs
- Experience with youth development
- Experience conducting community outreach and building relationships with youth-focused organizations
- Experience working with diverse populations and customers with limited English proficiency
- Bilingual skills, particularly Somali or Spanish
Essential Job Functions:
- Information Services: Provide friendly, approachable and respectful customer service to members of the public.
- Use information resources appropriately to meet the needs of the customer, in-person, in the community, and in an online environment.
- Provide instruction to customers on how to use and navigate information resources in both individual and group settings.
- Provide instruction to customers on the use of maker technologies such as the 3D printer.
- Discover customer reading interests and make recommendations for reading material.
- Building Relationships: Build relationships and network with other internal and external partners to fulfill the library's mission.
- Build ongoing relationships with strategic community partners.
- Participate on internal and/or external committees and collaborate with community groups or businesses.
- Participate in outreach events, representing the library in the community.
- Direct volunteer activities and assignments as requested.
- Participate in training and professional educational opportunities and networking.
- Programming: Coordinate, develop and deliver library programs to meet the needs of a diverse community and target audiences.
- Select or develop programs responsive to the needs of a diverse community.
- Collaborate with colleagues to implement appropriate marketing strategies and publicity materials for programs.
- Coordinate resources and materials to implement programs.
- Track community feedback, program evaluations and comments to inform program development.
- Collection Management: Maintain library collection areas and recommend resources in all formats.
- Make recommendations to material selectors based on branch/customer or program needs.
- Monitor collection status by reviewing statistics and other data to ensure a current, inclusive and vibrant collection.
- Create displays and merchandising of materials to promote the library collection.
Work Environment:
The work is sedentary and requires no special physical demands. The work involves minimal risks and observance of safety precautions typical of office settings. The work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled office. May require occasional travel.
