This position is located at the Sewell Mill Library & Cultural Center, 2051 Lower Roswell Rd, Marietta. This joint-use facility features a traditional mid-size library, a Creative Studios suite, a Black Box theater, an art gallery, and an outdoor amphitheater. This position oversees the Youth Services Department and is responsible for implementing programs for children and families. This position may be in charge in the absence of the Branch Manager.

Essential Functions

  1. Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned employees, volunteers, or community service workers; processes concerns and problems; directs work; counsels, disciplines, and completes employee performance appraisals.
  2. Supervises the operations of a branch or an assigned collection; coordinates daily work activities; organizes and prioritizes workload; makes work assignments; provides training as needed; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work; and troubleshoots problem situations.
  3. Develops and implements library programs and activities in assigned areas; designs programming to targeted readership; maintains records of program participation; assists in developing goals and objectives for area of specialty; recommends allocation of resources necessary to meet goals and objectives; interprets goals, objectives, and policies to the public; coordinates and oversees arrangement of physical facilities in assigned area; and manages the library in the absence of the branch manager.
  4. Provides customer service to library patrons and the public; assists with library programs, services, materials, facilities, equipment, fees, procedures, or other issues; responds to questions and complaints related to library operations; researches problems and initiates resolutions; greets visitors and directs them to areas of the library; assists patrons in requesting, selecting, and locating library materials; supervises the receipt and preparation of materials for cataloging; verifies the accuracy of bibliographic records; links processed items to matching records in the database.
  5. Supervises the selection, retention, and general development of a library collection; oversees the selection of books, periodicals, and other materials for purchase; prepares and oversees the preparation of order lists for library materials; reviews donated materials and determines which items to add to the collection; removes outdated, worn, and little-used materials from library collections as needed.
  6. Monitors usage of library computers; explains and enforces library rules for use of computers and Internet; performs basic maintenance and troubleshooting of computer systems and library equipment; coordinates service and repair activities as needed.
  7. Processes inter-library loan requests from patrons and other libraries; verifies and identifies requested materials; receives and processes borrowing requests and incoming material; completes related documentation.
  8. Provides outreach for the branch; visits schools to promote library services and programs; attends meetings of neighborhood organizations and various committees; promotes literacy programs; initiates and coordinates tours.
  9. Performs related administrative duties; monitors patron activities to ensure safety; monitors branch for needed maintenance or repairs; reviews meeting space applications; compiles statistics; and prepares and submits a variety of reports.
  10. Monitors inventory levels of equipment and supplies; initiates requests for new or replacement materials; recommends the purchase, lease, or rental of equipment related to services in assigned area.
  11. Performs all duties of subordinate library personnel as needed; provides circulation services to patrons; repairs or mends damaged books and materials; re-shelves and locates books and materials; restocks supplies; and performs general tasks related to operation and upkeep of the library.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Library Science & Information Science from an ALA Accredited University, supplemented by one year of librarian experience in library operations.

Enjoy outreach and getting out into the community.

Licenses and Certifications

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Librarian certification.

Physical Abilities

Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as rude/irate customers.
