Position Information

Position Title: Health Sciences Liaison Librarian - RSO

Position Summary: The Health Sciences Liaison Librarian will provide the full range of co-curricular teaching and learning support, reference and research consultation, and work collaboratively with faculty and students in support of health sciences education and research and in the development of specific medical informatics and health sciences information meta-literacies. This position provides instructional assistance to members of the academic community, including students, faculty, and administrators in optometric clinical practices, vision science, and other health sciences disciplines. The Health Sciences Liaison Librarian reports to the Director of Public Services.

Location: Position will work out of Rosenberg School of Optometry located at 9725 Datapoint Drive, San Antonio, TX 78229.

Job Duties

  1. Reference/Research Consultation:
    • Provides graduate level medical reference and research consultation to students and faculty.
    • Consults with individuals one-on-one and in groups.
    • Works with other UIW Health Sciences liaisons in the development of online learning artifacts in support of autonomous discovery.
    • Assists with the discovery of research data such as open data.
  2. Information Literacy:
    • Develops appropriate health sciences-focused meta-literacy classes on demand and via scheduled times as part of the libraries’ formal instruction program.
    • Develops and assesses student learning through the development of appropriate learning outcomes and assessments.
    • Provides evidence of assessment practices.
  3. Faculty Collaboration:
    • Collaborates with faculty in the development of appropriate instructional materials.
    • Works collaboratively with instructional faculty to establish appropriate learning and research objectives.
    • Works collaboratively with faculty in providing professional development in the identification of appropriate learning objects, in providing literature reviews, in scholarship and publishing support, and in intellectual property concerns such as copyright and fair use.
    • Works collaboratively with faculty in support of scholarly publishing.
  4. Collection Development:
    • Provides selection development including the weeding of materials from the assigned health science library collections.
    • Works closely with the collection development manager and faculty to acquire needed resources in support of the curriculum.
    • Works closely with the health sciences collection team and with library technical services staff to assure timely acquisition and processing of resources.
  5. Management:
    • Manages the assigned health sciences library space and collections. Serves as a back-up liaison if needed.
    • Ensures continuity of library services and access to information resources.
    • Ensures the daily operation of branch facility.
    • Supervises and trains student workers and RSO Library paraprofessionals.
    • Provides reports for regional and specialized accreditation standards for respective areas.
  6. Professional Development:
    • Serves on UIW Libraries committees and university committees as part of a shared governance culture.
    • Stays abreast of developments in the field of academic libraries and health sciences libraries.
    • Participates in professional associations and organizations.
  7. Special Projects:
    • Works with the Director of Public Services / Dean to provide and report data and reports as requested.
    • Actively contributes to national and regional accreditation processes and other special projects assigned by library leadership.

Qualifications

  • Must be a highly skilled user of medical databases with demonstrated expertise in PICO and other evidence-based medicine information literacy processes.
  • Must possess strong communication, written, oral, and teaching skills.
  • Must have solid understanding of learning assessment practices.
  • Must be able to utilize technology to provide instruction and services to online learners.
  • Proficiency using major medical databases, research and data sources.
  • Must be able to work well with all members of the academic community.
  • Must be able to work independently with little or no supervision, evenings and/or weekends as needed.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Required Education

MLS / MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution.

Required Work Experience

  • Two (2) years of experience as a professional librarian providing teaching, learning, and research support in health sciences information literacy and medical informatics.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a professional librarian teaching evidence-based healthcare information literacy concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of relevant experience in an academic / health sciences library providing teaching, learning, and research co-curricular support.
  • Familiarity with Alma (ExLibris) public access catalog and the Primo discovery tool, MS Office products, spreadsheets, online learning platforms, and LibGuides.
  • Certification from the Academy of Health Information Professionals.
  • Undergraduate degree in a health sciences related field.

Work Hours

Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with flexibility to work evenings or weekends as needed.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 20lbs of library materials.
  • Ability to reach overhead, bend, squat, climb to retrieve library materials.
  • Ability to push/pull library carts holding up to 60+ lbs.
  • Ability to regularly move about library locations, as well as attend meetings at the various library locations.
