Under the supervision of the Adult Services Manager, the Program and Event Librarian is responsible for providing innovative adult programming and coordinating large events. This position develops, plans, coordinates, executes, and evaluates programs for adults, and larger all-age events. This position also assists customers of all ages at public service desks with information and reference questions; assists and instructs customers with their use of library computers, electronic devices, and other technologies. The Program and Event Librarian is customer-focused; is able to build successful partnerships with other organizations and groups; is knowledgeable about library materials and technology; and is comfortable hosting events and speaking in front of groups. Duties include being in charge of the library building at various times.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate adult programming
  • Coordinate programs featuring outside speakers
  • Coordinate author visits
  • Assist and/or lead major programs involving multiple library departments
  • Build partnerships with relevant organizations and groups
  • Assist and advise customers with their use of library resources, including books, movies, music, media, and electronic resources
  • Assist with questions on software, makerspace tools, and other technology related needs to customers of all ages
  • Assist with training staff and volunteers
  • Answer informational and reference questions for customers of all ages
  • Coordinate and contribute content to internal staff and public webpages
  • Participate in departmental and library committees and training activities
  • Attend and participate in professional development activities
  • Assist with monitoring and correcting customer behavior to ensure a safe and welcoming environment
  • Serve as Librarian in Charge during specific shifts
  • Participate in departmental and library-wide training and activities, including technology and safety training
  • Provide excellent internal and external customer service
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Excellent computer and technology skills, including use of tablets, mobile devices, and social media
  • Experience developing and coordinating programming for adults
  • Exceptional customer service skills and enthusiasm for working with the public
  • Ability to work with library customers and staff in a consistently friendly, respectful, and efficient manner
  • Knowledge of and interest in books, music, movies, and other media in all their forms
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team within the department and the library as a whole, including leading and coordinating the work of others
  • Ability to issue guidance and ensure compliance with the Library’s Rules of Conduct and policies
  • Proficiency with workplace productivity software, including skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of professional-level library practices, and an interest in keeping up with developments within the field
  • Ability to maintain reliable attendance and ability to vary work schedule as needed
  • Ability to maintain a varied schedule, including day, evening, and weekend rotations
  • Physical ability to lift and carry items up to 40 pounds, assist with room setup and push fully loaded carts of library materials
  • Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving history, and transportation for job-related transportation
  • Satisfactory pre-employment background check

Education:

  • Master’s degree in library science (MLS) from an ALA accredited institution required
  • Customer service experience in a public library experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Spanish and/or French is helpful
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
