Why does the job exist?
This position resides at the New Mexico State Library Development Bureau in Santa Fe. The Continuing Education Librarian is responsible for librarian certification and coordinating continuing education resources and programs for New Mexico's public library staff. This includes identifying training needs, coordinating and delivering online and in-person training, contracting with expert trainers, and promoting professional development opportunities statewide. The Continuing Education Librarian also serves as a consultant to public libraries statewide, providing advice and assistance on all aspects of public library services according to recognized best practices and identified community needs. This position requires travel both in and out of state.
How does it get done?
Manages statewide professional development opportunities for New Mexico library staff. Plans, develops, and implements trainings; manages librarian certification; coordinates initiatives with professional associations and other groups; and stays current with trends in professional development to meet the emerging needs of New Mexico library staff.
Manages projects; recruits and sets up contracts with presenters; arranges venues; promotes programs; maintains project and participation records; and evaluates programs for state and national reports.
Provides advice, outreach, and consultative services to librarians and library workers on a broad range of library-related topics as well as leadership, soft-skills, community engagement, and community asset mapping. Participates in staff and organizational meetings and in outreach activities to build awareness of State Library services. Supports other projects, programs, and colleagues as assigned in the Development Bureau and the State Library. Collaborates with other bureaus within the State Library as needed and assigned. Other duties as assigned related to the position.
Participates in professional organizations, including the New Mexico Library Association. Represents the New Mexico State Library in formal programs and presentations, as well as in written and oral communication at the national, state, and local levels.

This role is dedicated to serving public libraries and their staff in the State of New Mexico.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has at least three (3) years of experience in a public library setting; experience assessing professional development needs; experience providing training to meet accessibility needs; and public speaking and customer service experience.
Minimum Qualification
Master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or recognized by the appropriate body of another country) with two (2) years of experience in performing and providing advanced library technical operations, effective library and information services, plus cataloging experience and managerial experience. Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Position will require the ability to operate a state vehicle and extensive laptop and telephone usage.
