Job Title: Youth Services Librarian, Part-Time Teen Services

Location: Scotch Plains Public Library

Hours: up to 25 hours per week, including one evening and one Saturday per month

Job Description: The Scotch Plains Public Library is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Part-Time Youth Services Librarian to engage and support our teen patrons (grades 6-12) while assisting with general Youth Services responsibilities. The ideal candidate will be passionate about fostering a welcoming environment for our teen patrons and empowering teen volunteers.

Responsibilities:

  1. Perform all ordering and deselecting for a varied collection of young adult materials, including print and digital media.
  2. Develop and implement programs and activities specifically for teens, including book clubs, workshops, outreach, and special events.
  3. Onboard, train, and supervise an active corps of teen volunteers, including an active teen advisory board.
  4. Provide reference and readers’ advisory services to teens and younger patrons.
  5. Create and maintain teen book displays and booklists.
  6. Create promotional materials and utilize social media and other tools to engage and inform teens and families about library programs and services.
  7. Collaborate with local schools and community organizations to promote library services and programs.
  8. Create and update content for the teen pages on the library website; create and update event information on the library website calendar.
  9. Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities as needed.
  10. Foster a safe and inclusive space for all youth patrons.

Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree in Library Science
  2. Previous experience working with teens and children in a library, educational, or community setting is highly desirable.
  3. Strong knowledge of young adult and children’s literature, as well as current trends in youth culture.
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with a diverse group of young patrons.
  5. Experience in customer service and collection development.
  6. Proficiency with library technology and digital resources.
  7. Ability to communicate clearly, work independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions:

  1. Must be available to work at least one evening per week and one Saturday per month.
  2. Flexibility to adjust hours as needed for special events or programming.

Salary: The hourly rate is $34 per hour for individuals with an MLIS.
