Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of clerical library work, including circulation maintenance, interlibrary loans, patron assistance, and other library services and activities. This position requires the ability to understand and follow verbal and written instruction using established policies and procedures.

This position works a schedule that alternates weekly: Monday, Thursday, Friday (Week A), and Monday, Thursday, Saturday (Week B). It requires working two Saturdays per month and evening hours twice per week.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Greets library patrons.
  • Works the circulation desk including checking books and library materials in/out.
  • Processes fine payments and maintains cash drawer.
  • Processes library card applications and explains library policies to new patrons.
  • Conducts library and internet research and assists with locating library materials, including but not limited to the use of the library catalog, electronic databases, online resources, and print sources, and provides referrals to outside sources as needed.
  • Assists patrons using the computer lab to print documents.
  • Utilizes Microsoft Office products.
  • Provides reader advisory services.
  • Delivers exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Prepares and submits regular cash reports to the Finance Department.
  • Maintains library material files and records.
  • Empties book drop, returns items to circulation using computer catalog system, and physically shelves returned materials.
  • Shelves library materials by transporting books, DVDs, and other materials to the correct location, placing books and other materials on the shelf in the correct order and rearranging books and straightening materials as needed.
  • Assists with library activities and special events for children, teens, and adults.
  • Assists in the creation of marketing materials and displays to promote activities and services.
  • Assists in set up for activities and events by preparing related materials and moving tables, chairs, furniture, and other items as needed.
  • Receives and processes new books and library materials by creating spine labels.
  • Stamps and covers books with appropriate book covers.
  • Repairs, cleans, and evaluates the condition of books and removes damaged books and materials from general circulation.
  • Assists with opening and closing the library.
  • Required to work a flexible schedule that includes variable hours, nights, and weekends.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of library policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of library classification methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
  • Skill in providing customer service to library patrons.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and automated library systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus one (1) year of clerical or library employment experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Texas Driver License at the time of hire.

Physical:

  • This is medium work requiring the exertion of 0 – 75 pounds of force occasionally, 0-50 pounds frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, and reposition objects including books, materials, and loaded book carts.
  • May be subject to bending, reaching, kneeling, and lifting such as retrieving or replacing books, files, documents, and records.
  • Ability to traverse about an ADA accessible office setting, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to remain stationary when assisting a patron, working at a keyboard for extended periods of time and constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and printer.
  • Ability to manipulate objects and demonstrate small, precise movements repetitively. Ability to shelve books and other library materials at all heights from floor level up to 7' using a stepping stool or with accommodation.

Environmental:

  • Tasks are regularly performed indoors in an office setting without frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Occasional outside work may be required for specific programs or events.

Sensory:

  • Tasks require the manipulation of objects and demonstration of small, precise movements, the ability to detect and distinguish various features of one’s surroundings, and the ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with others.
