Library Secretary - 10-month - anticipated

Crystal Lake South High School has an anticipated opening for a ten-month library secretary. Placement on the salary schedule is in accordance with the current CHESS agreement. Please review the job description below.

Reports to: Humanities Division Leader/Vice Principal Length of Contract: Ten Months; 8 hours per day

Salary Lane: Clerical Level 1

Responsibilities:

The library secretary is a ten-month clerical position supporting students and staff with library physical and digital resources and other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of criminal history records information check
  • Evidence of physical fitness and freedom from communicable diseases
  • Strong interpersonal skills: a friendly customer-service approach for verbal and nonverbal communication
  • Interested and willing to read books written for high school audience
  • Ability to fluently operate a computer including competency to answer questions and troubleshoot software and hardware (Gmail, Google Calendar, Apps)
  • Self-motivated and problem-solving disposition with excellent accuracy/attention to detail, time management
  • Perform specialized clerical tasks with limited supervision
  • Prioritize and organize multiple tasks while working with interruptions
  • Satisfy the physical requirements stated below
  • Observe and follow all D155 policies and procedures including maintaining confidentiality

Specific Duties:

  • Assist students and staff with digital reading apps (i.e. SORA)
  • Search by keyword, subject, etc. for print materials
  • Check-in/check-out and renew books for students
  • Manage interlibrary loan requests
  • Assist students with scheduling research appointments
  • Answer general questions about library online resources
  • Answer general questions about Google Docs, Google Slides, printing, email, attachments, etc.
  • Curate print and online resources on various topics to prepare materials for teachers
  • Run reports for overdue materials, prepare notices to email or mail

Promotion, Advertising, Communications:

  • Read Young Adult books regularly to provide personal recommendations
  • Plan, organize, and implement displays, bulletin boards, written and digital publications
  • Assist with library social media posts regarding: new books and publishing news
  • Maintain the daily announcements in Google Slides for school website/marquee
  • Track and encourage participation in reading programs and events (i.e. Lincoln Award)
  • Assist with communications efforts by the library and building (social media, student recognition, email, etc.) as assigned

Collection Management:

  • Shelve books in proper order and sections; re-shelf as necessary
  • Process new books for circulation
  • Recommend specific titles/resources for library purchasing
  • Collect usage statistics data from databases & Google forms
  • Edit catalog records as directed

Supervision & Service:

  • Maintain a friendly atmosphere through frequent interactions with students and staff
  • Maintain academic productivity by requesting quiet collaboration
  • Take hourly attendance and manage/supervise students, classes, and events in the library
  • Providing supervision in other areas of the school as needed

Additional Duties:

  • Manage building’s student textbook loan program
  • Assist with distribution/registration/textbook return
  • Provide lamination services to the building as assigned
  • Coordinate teacher supply requests
  • Other duties as assigned by the building administration

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Continuously requires the ability to sit, talk, and understand the speech of another person
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
