This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) Union and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

DEPARTMENT: Library
HOURS OF WORK: Tuesday & Wednesday 11:00 AM to 7:15 PM; Thursday 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM; Friday & Saturday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
LOCATION: Mountain View Branch; 120 Bragaw Street, Anchorage, AK

Responsibilities:
  1. Assist the public with the circulation of materials.
  2. Help meet the material needs of patrons through circulation: charging, discharging, and library card registration.
  3. Provide technology assistance and quick reference assistance using our Integrated Library System or the Online Public Access Computers.
  4. Assist patrons with the Self Checkout Machines, copiers, website, databases, and occasionally our Automated Handling System.
  5. Provide support to understaffed Library locations and complete special projects.
  6. Assist with Library programs both inside and outside the Library.
  7. Resolve patron inquiries regarding their account, including long overdue/missing materials and accepting fines and fees using cash register and card reader.
  8. Train and assign tasks to volunteers.
  9. Other duties include emptying book drops, shelving, sorting, answering phones, shipping, and routing materials to other locations.
  10. Assist with bus pass sales, voter registration, passport applications, and other revenue-generating opportunities.
  11. Receive office supplies.
  12. Establish and maintain effective relations with coworkers, the public, and vendors; treat everyone with honesty, respect, and fairness.
  13. Assist in APL's diversity and inclusiveness efforts.
  14. Ensure excellent customer service and a positive user experience while being an efficient member of the team.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school, GED, or equivalent and one (1) year of customer service and/or library experience.

Preference:
Preference will be given to returning Seasonal Employees who are eligible for Recall as per AMEA 3.14.8, and to any current Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) employees.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160) and (AS 12.62.400). Accordingly, it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from the date requested. The processing fee of $48.25 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable), is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference: Veterans or those wishing to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application.
