Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and meets certification requirements as established by the Georgia Department of Education. Certified in field and meets all requirements to be "Highly Qualified" as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, PERMITS:
Valid media specialist certificate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Incumbent must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function of the position. When appropriate, reasonable accommodations will be provided to afford persons with disabilities an opportunity to perform the essential functions of the position.
Incumbent must be able to provide a Criminal Background Check with results that adhere to Emanuel County Board of Education Policy GAK(1).
Knowledge of media services and appropriate instructional technology. Ability and training necessary to effectively utilize technology in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of instruction. Evidence of exemplary human relation skills as well as organization and planning skills. Evidence of ability to communicate and work effectively with students, parents, and staff.
PERFORMANCE FUNCTIONS:
- Develops a positive climate that encourages students and teachers to make optimum use of the resources through the media center.
- Creates and maintains a safe media center environment that is conducive to learning, appropriate to the maturity and interests of students, and supportive of all students and staff.
- Provides leadership in the instructional program.
- Promotes school-wide utilization of library/media facilities, resources, and services.
- Works cooperatively with classroom teachers to help students develop habits of good readers, for independent reference work, and to develop skills in the securing of materials in relation to planned assignments.
- Maintains confidentiality of students and students' records.
- Engages in continuous professional development and renews certification in a timely manner.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Selects materials based on the curriculum, teaching strategies, learning activities, test results, and student interest.
- Manages the acquisition, processing, organization, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of all media resources.
- Administers budget allocations and uses proper procedures for all expenditures.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
- Informs media center users of media center rules and regulations.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, county policy, and administrative regulations.
- Assumes responsibility for the safety of students under his or her supervision.
- Plans, designs, aligns, and produces instructional materials for use by students and staff.
- Sets short and long term goals for the media program/center in conjunction with school, student and staff needs/priorities.
- Provides information about and complies with copyright laws.
- Coordinates procedures for challenged materials.
- Disseminates information about the Acceptable Use Policy for Internet and monitors that policy within the media center.
- Carries out such other duties which may be assigned by direct supervisor.
PERFORMANCE FACTORS:

Ability to adjust work processes without incident when new and unexpected directions are given relative to a project that may be in process. Ability to maintain composure and not compound a situation when interacting with persons who may be angry, demanding or otherwise less than polite.

- Organizational Skills: Ability to establish priorities, simultaneously manage multiple tasks; and deliver a quality work product by a designated deadline.

- Attendance and Dependability: Ability to report to work at the scheduled time and to seldom be absent from work. Demonstrate prompt and regular work attendance. Process appropriate paperwork to authorize absences in accordance with school system procedures. Ability to complete work in a timely, accurate manner and to be conscientious about work performance.
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually by the Principal or designated Supervisor in accordance with Policy GBI - Evaluation of Personnel.
