Sitar Arts Center engages DC youth, from early childhood to young adulthood, in building a creative community of learning and belonging that removes financial and cultural barriers to arts education and career training.

What You’ll Do

Sitar Arts Center is seeking a wonderful, experienced Music Teacher to work with a range of young people to support Camp Sitar this June – August 2025.

Camp Sitar provides visual, performing art, and sports and rec classes over six weeks to kindergarten - 8th graders in our full-day program.

As the Music Teacher, you will work directly with students in K-8th grade engaging them in a fun learning environment through selected music, songs, instruments, and/or active musical activities and games.

Responsibilities Include

  • Design and facilitate a music curriculum that engages students in K-8th through the use of varied music, songs, instruments and/or active games.
  • Work as a team with teachers and staff to coordinate and participate in all camp activities, field trips, and student showcases/exhibitions.
  • Supervise camp students during program hours, in and outside of classes, mealtimes, outside play, activities, and transitions.
  • Attend all meetings, including pre-camp planning and orientations, and scheduled camp dates.
  • Track student progress and communicate student needs to staff.

What You’ll Earn

Pay is hourly, $26 - $30 per hour, based on experience.

When You'll Work

This six-week position is seasonal starting June 23, 2025, with a daily schedule of 8:30 am–4:30 pm.

Other required work dates will be provided before employment acceptance. All required work dates are paid including:

  • Pre-Summer Planning Sessions
  • Restorative Practices and Classroom Management Training
  • Camp Orientation

Who You Are

As the Music Teacher, you are a positive, inclusive role model who is warm, supportive, and engaging. You experience immense joy when sharing your craft with young people, meeting their needs and adapting to ensure their safety and success throughout the process. You enjoy collaboration and improvisation and believe strong organization and creative youth development is the key to happy and engaged students. Most importantly, you have a strong love for the arts and children of all ages and believe that everyone should have access to the arts.

Key Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years Music teaching experience.
  • Experience building curriculum for grades K–8.
  • Can read music and play an instrument.
  • Previous experience working in a camp setting.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Varied skill set that features an extensive knowledge of diverse genres of music, music theory, and musicianship. Comfortable leading a group of student musicians in a band setting.
  • Knowledge, practice, and experience with differentiated instruction, equity, accessibility, and anti-racism.

Requirements

  • Background check and TB test.
