Job Description

Ohio Department of Public Safety - Ohio State Highway Patrol

Report in location: 2855 West Dublin Granville Road Columbus OH 43235

Work Hours: Rotating 24 Hour Shifts

Oversee all dispatching & related activities for assigned center & supervise Highway Patrol Radio Dispatcher (HPRD) personnel in the use of the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS), Multi-Agency Radio Communication System (MARCS) Radios, & Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD) in order to dispatch officers & equipment to assist the public & other agencies. Responsibilities include:

  1. Provide direct supervision of HPRD staff in assigned dispatch centers.
  2. Prepare schedules for personnel, handle payroll functions & entry, approve leave requests, complete performance evaluations & administer selection process.
  3. Provide guidance concerning dispatch operations and develop & implement communication center programs & policies.
  4. Evaluate & identify possible training needs of staff and investigate possible LEADS rule infractions.
  5. Assist with administrative investigations concerning subordinate rule violations.
  6. Utilize CAD system to receive & transmit radio communications dispatching law enforcement, other state agencies, &/or equipment.
  7. Perform quality review checks and create statistical reports for administrative staff.
  8. Attend Dispatcher Supervisor In-Service and assist District Staff with Quality Review Audits.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

12 months experience in operation of computer aided dispatch software; 12 months training or experience in Federal Communication Commission rules & regulations; 6 months training or experience on Law Enforcement Automated Data System; 3 months training or experience in employee training & development; 3 months training or experience in public relations.

-Or 12 months experience as Highway Patrol Radio Dispatcher, 52461.

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Supplemental Information

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT:

Must successfully obtain LEADS & CAD certification prior to completion of probationary period; must re-certify in LEADS every two years as mandated by Ohio Administrative Code.

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Works weekends with rotating days off; subject to call out for dispatcher related incidents; travel required.

This position is essential, meaning the duties this job performs are critical to the continued operations of the Ohio Department of Public Safety during a public safety emergency.
