Responsible for setting up and taking down all equipment necessary for the court reporter to comply with the requirements incumbent upon a court reporter under the rules and regulations established by the Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council of Georgia. Attend and take down all hearings and trials as directed by the assigned judge. Transcribe, copy, and deliver copies to counsel or the parties as directed by the assigned judge or as per operating protocols.

  • Takes verbatim recordings of formal and/or legal proceedings; utilizes stenography, voice to text, or other appropriate equipment; sets up, connects and verifies proper operation of equipment prior to proceedings; reiterates testimony and court records from notes upon request; and ensures confidentiality of all evidence and testimony.
  • Prepares certified written and electronic verbatim transcripts; proofreads, edits, prints as needed, and binds transcript; prepares trial index; attaches photocopies and/or digital files of all trial exhibits as appropriate; certifies accuracy and completeness of documents; prepares certified documents for filing with Clerk of Court; produces and distributes copies of documents as appropriate; and maintains confidentiality of official records.
  • Receives, inventories, records, and stores trial exhibits entered as evidence in court; files case exhibits with proper agency when necessary; maintains exhibits during court hearings and trials; and files/stores case exhibits in specified or provided storage areas in compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Prepares, collates, and binds printed transcripts of court proceedings when necessary; prepares digital media copies of transcripts as requested; backs-up and archives electronic files and exhibits for storage in compliance with applicable laws; and responds to requests for transcripts within designated timeframes.
  • Prepares invoices for transcription services of court proceedings, court orders, and other legal hearings; bills attorneys, other individuals, and agencies according to fee schedules; and maintains copies of billing, invoices, and payments.
  • Maintains court reporting equipment and supplies used in daily work assignments; ensures proper working order of equipment; makes minor repairs; makes back-up recordings per court protocols; and sends equipment to outside vendors for major repairs as necessary.
  • Travel to/from each county courthouse in the circuit as needed and occasional other offsite locations as directed.
TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
Completion of required apprentice and/or internship training in court reporting and sufficient course work to obtain certification as a professional court reporter from a recognized licensing or accrediting agency. Must meet continuing education requirements per the Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council of Georgia.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
High school diploma or GED required; three years of court reporting experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain certification in good standing as a Certified Court Reporter (CCR) from the Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council of Georgia and must possess and maintain affirmation as a sworn Deputy Clerk of the Court if required.

Requires accurately reporting of court proceedings and translating takedown to English.

Working knowledge of legal and medical terminology, correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and theories and principles of basic mathematics.

Knowledge and compliance with laws, rules, and regulations governing court reporting profession and transcription activities, court policies and procedures. Ability to use court reporting and transcription equipment.

Knowledge of general office practices, procedures, equipment, and technology.

Compliance with professional standards and the Code of Professional Ethics of the Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council of Georgia.

Maintaining exhibits and documentary evidence as needed or necessary.

Communicating effectively with judges, coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
