The Journal Star in Peoria, Illinois, is looking for an energetic sports reporter to cover trending topics in college sports, with an emphasis on the University of Illinois.
This full-time position requires an ability to spot interesting topics in sports and drive the conversation by providing context to the biggest and most interesting stories to readers. The ideal candidate is a team player who is motivated, social media savvy, and produces content on a daily basis. Contributions to high school sports coverage and occasional articles on pro sports in Illinois are also expected.
We're a guild newsroom, with a work week of 7.5 hours a day and 37.5 hours a week. Starting pay for this position is $47,000, with benefits. Weekend work is expected regularly.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's in communications, journalism, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong command of grammar and AP style.
- Quickly produces content that is clean and accurate, with a strong use of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
- Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.
- Passionate and enthusiastic about content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.
- Comfortable in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations.
- Collaborates well with others.
- Able to work nights and weekends as needed by the news cycle.
- Must live locally. However, reporters have the option to work from home or the office.
