Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Executive Director of the Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), the Visual Impairment / Orientation & Mobility Teacher provides direct and/or consultative special education services relating to vision loss and is responsible for facilitating concept development and preparing students with visual impairments to travel independently and safely. The Visual Impairment/Orientation & Mobility Specialist travels to the students' assigned schools and/or home/community locations to provide direct and/or consultative services. These services enable students from birth through 21 years of age to travel safely, efficiently, and independently in their home, school, and community environments. Community-based instruction is a possible component of the O&M program.

Requirements / Qualifications

  1. Education: Must possess a valid California Education Specialist Credential - Visual Impairments and/or authorization to provide specialized services related to Orientation & Mobility. Current Orientation & Mobility Certification, highly desirable or ability to obtain upon hire. Individuals currently in a program or working to obtain the VI and/or O&M authorization may be considered.
  2. Experience: At minimum three years of successful teaching or student teaching the visually impaired in a California school district, SELPA, or County Office of Education, preferred. Assistive Technology Certification, highly desirable or willing to obtain.

Comments and Other Information
The employee will be a member of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS); LCOE does not participate in the Social Security system. Benefits will include:
