Job Title: Writing Tutor

Employment type: part-time (wage)

Work schedule: 29 hours or less per week, variable schedule

Overview: Through robust staff education, writing tutors collaborate with students to develop their writing across disciplines, as well as their skills in other subjects in the humanities taught at Piedmont Virginia Community College. Other subjects are based on the tutor’s academic background and comfort level. Writing tutors are also embedded in online and in-person courses in order to build connections with the Writing Center and to support students one-on-one, in small groups or whole class activities.

Duties and Responsibilities: Writing Center tutors work with students individually and collectively in writing and may also work with students in foreign languages, humanities, and social sciences. Rather than teaching students, tutors collaborate with and model the thinking and processes (such as using course resources, working with others, asking questions, navigating the library, etc.) that can support success in their classes. Tutors document their work and participate in regular staff development (both online and in person). When they are not working with students, tutors develop resources and conduct research to support student writing at PVCC. Tutors also give and receive feedback, using this feedback to further develop their skills. Though this is an in-person position, tutors also work with students in Zoom during their shifts.
