Overview: WBBM Newsradio, Chicago's leading multi-platform news organization, is seeking a passionate, dynamic journalist to serve as a full-time morning drive news editor and writer.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
- Oversee news production during the course of a daypart and create rundowns.
- Select sound to air during newscasts, write and approve copy, and coordinate with the digital content team.
- Work off an assigned lineup drawing information from resource copy, audio files, and appropriate network sources.
- Review incoming news stories and choose the stories of highest interest and relevance to the audience.
- Assemble an hourly lineup of news for writers and anchors to prepare.
- Assign and edit audio to newscasts.
- Pursue new ways of presenting stories for maximum audience impact.
- Bring stories of interest to the attention of the manager on duty for reporter follow-up.
- Work closely with news anchors and reporters in preparing newscasts.
- Act as the de facto leader in the newsroom in the absence of the Managing Editor and the Director of News and Programming.
- Direct assistant producers to take in tape and feeds, and work with newsroom personnel to pursue breaking stories.
- Coordinate coverage as required and respond to inquiries from listeners and officials.
- Shifts can include weekends and holidays as needed.
Qualifications
More About You:
- Excellent news judgment and familiarity with the Chicago news environment.
- Familiarity with broadcast style and strong ability to incorporate audio into written stories.
- Excellent grammar, good spelling, and ability to use social media to gather news and promote content.
- Understanding of legal guidelines governing broadcast media and excellent editorial judgment.
- Friendly attitude and positive interaction with listeners, the public, and colleagues.
- Bachelor's Degree (Required), preferably in Communications/English/Journalism or related fields.
- 3+ years of newsroom experience preferred.
- Experience with digital media, social media, and video.
- Ability to write and edit news stories under tight deadlines.
- Ability to be flexible and work under pressure.
- High energy with the ability to think innovatively.
- Required to join the WGA union if not already a member.
