As a Librarian you will support the Department Coordinator to serve the needs of our diverse community and provide superior customer service to patrons and coworkers.

This candidate will also be an engaging individual who brings innovative ideas, takes initiative, and seeks to expand collaborations and partnerships throughout our community. You must exude positivity as you work with the JDL team to promote the service-minded culture and vision of JDL.
Every day you will interact with patrons in varying ways. This will require professionalism, patience, and a solid understanding of JDL policies and procedures. The Librarian will be responsible for all areas of the department, branch, and serves as a resource for other staff members.
A successful Librarian candidate will possess a MLIS from an ALA accredited college or university, have experience in readers advisory, knowledge of contemporary library best practices, policies and methods and a solid understanding of current technology, data bases, and search techniques.
In conversations with patrons and coworkers the Librarian is expected to be JDL's biggest advocate. We are seeking someone that uses customer service talents to build relationships with patrons and the community, someone that is knowledgeable in collection development and who can contribute to collection expansion and who is comfortable making recommendations. The successful candidate must have problem solving aptitudes and the ability to take direction and lead with optimism and the ability to organize personal work responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Under the direction Department Coordinator, provides specialized service to the public in the area of adults and families, shares responsibility for collection development and selection of branch materials in this area, responsible for special programs and projects to promote and expand library services in the library system and the community.

Is responsible for special programs and projects to promote and expand library services within the library system and in the community.

Ability to see and hear, read and write, type and operate and manipulate computers, perform basic mathematical computations, communicate effectively, work a determined schedule including evenings and weekends, take and follow direction, work well with patrons coworkers and management, organize work successfully, maintain confidentiality, give attention to detail, maintain a positive customer service attitude (internal and external), meet deadlines, work independently, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

- Performs readers' advisory activities such as compiling reading lists and bibliographies
- Assists public in use of library collection including print materials, online databases and library catalog
- May instruct patrons in use of library equipment including computers, microfilm readers and printers
- Provides community information and referral services
- May conduct library tours
Shares responsibility for collection development of specific areas of collection
- Attends various seminars, conferences and workshops, reads various journals and professional publications to keep current on latest methods and techniques in library services
- Orders materials for specific areas of Carnegie collection
- Assists in maintaining and monitoring budget for specific areas of Carnegie collection
- Weeds collection of outdated and worn materials
- Is responsible for knowing and following library system procedures and policies
Is responsible for special programs and projects to promote and expand library services within the library system and in the community.
- Plans, implements and evaluates specific departmental programs
- May make special presentations for branches, community groups, health and senior citizen fairs etc.
- May coordinate writing of weekly book review for local newspaper column
- May plan, and coordinate outreach services to include readers advisory services for the physically handicapped, homebound etc.

Employment Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited university
- 1-2 years of business experience
- 1 year of similar job experience
- May need possession of valid Michigan drivers license
- Proficient in technology
- Knowledgeable in all areas of social media
- Ability to work and maintain a positive relationship with the public and staff in a pleasant and enthusiastic manner
- Willingness to work day, evening, or weekend work schedules
