Digital Scholarship Services (DSS) fosters the use of transformative technology to manage, preserve, and share digital scholarship in an increasingly dynamic and computationally-rich research ecosystem. DSS provides infrastructure, education and consultation services that support research data management and curation, open access publishing, digital collection-building, and critical literacies for digital research across disciplines.
Expected Salary Range: $28.99 - $31.02 per hour.
Essential Functions (Key Responsibilities)
Digital Scholarship Services Research Support and Instruction (40%) Coordinates the DSS department's LibAnswers queue ticket system; responsible for reviewing tickets, responding to queries and making referrals to specialists; co-coordinates with Reference and other departments to develop FAQ collection, ensuring tickets have been closed, and patron questions have been answered. Coordinates DSS department Canvas instance; communicates with the Office of Information Technology to ensure courses are active, add instructors and users as needed, provide administrative and instructional support to Canvas-based instruction program. Develop instructional content, such as in-person or asynchronous videos and tutorials, covering services and tools supported by department. As part of a team, administers the Digital Sandbox service. Responsibilities include:
managing user accounts, reviewing and responding to help requests, collaborating on policy and workflow decisions, developing and updating training materials and documentation. Provide formatting and submission support for graduate theses and dissertations as a contributor to the Theses and Dissertation Team.
Outreach and Assessment (30%) Maintains online presence for DSS department, including updating public web pages, internal staff pages, Vimeo collections, etc. Participates in outreach events, such as the Graduate Welcome and Orientation Resource Fair. Collects and preserves department instruction and system usage statistics; contributes to data analysis and reporting efforts.
Departmental Duties (20%) Responsible for departmental business workflows including reviewing and reconciling monthly ledgers, initiating and completing KFS requisitions, and ordering supplies. Serves as a supervisor for student assistants in the DSS department. Actively participates in department meetings and project teams.
Other Duties (10%) Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
Strong interpersonal skills to oversee student employees and interact effectively with a wide variety of co-workers throughout the UC Irvine Libraries. Required Ability to supervise students, including training, overseeing workflow, delegating responsibility, and evaluating performance. Required Ability to maintain work schedule and meet deadlines despite interruptions and distractions. Required Familiarity with the research lifecycle and ability to contribute to the development of new library services to meet emerging research needs. Required Minimum of 3 years of related experience working in an academic or public library or relevant education and training. Required Experience providing research or consultative support on a variety of topics. Required Effective oral and written English language communication skills sufficient to communicate clearly and interact effectively with patrons, student employees, colleagues, and to prepare accurate and effective written materials. Required Ability to use a personal computer word processing software, email, computer printers, and external hardware. Required Skills to work independently, follow through on assignments, meet deadlines, be flexible and satisfy workload priorities. Required Ability to learn new software, including spreadsheets, databases, and Web interfaces. Required Experience with methods, tools, services related to digital scholarship such as open source coding, open science publishing, repository systems, data visualization, digital collections, or digital humanities. Required Ability to listen perceptively and analyze complex problems, evaluate alternative solutions, and respond in the most effective manner. Required Ability to establish and implement new procedures, organize, and implement special projects.
