BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:

The Court Reporter is responsible for making a word-for-word transcript of legal proceedings. The verbatim documentation in criminal, civil, and other Court proceedings requires a professional who is highly skilled and trained in court reporting. This position is a State employee, working under the direct supervision of a Circuit Judge.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES:

  1. Record and preserve all courtroom proceedings through acceptable verbatim recording methods, such as machine shorthand, or steno mask.
  2. Transcribe records of proceedings, and provide accurate transcripts to persons requesting the same, within a reasonable amount of time, contingent upon payment of fees.
  3. Perform a variety of legal office support work including preparing letters, correspondence, forms, and other documents.
  4. Edit/proofread/correct written materials, maintain copies of documents, and monitor and update files.
  5. Generate reports, operate office equipment, and perform courtroom duties, such as marking exhibits.

SPECIFIC EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  1. Serve as official Court Reporter at the pleasure of the Judge per statute.
  2. Make record of proceedings for which record is needed.
  3. Prepare and certify official transcripts of on-the-record proceedings.
  4. Provide transcripts of proceedings for use of the Judge as requested.
  5. Perform other duties as directed by the Judge.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
(Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis provided a high school diploma or GED has been obtained.)

EDUCATION: High School diploma or equivalent, and certification as a Court Reporter in the State of Missouri, or National Certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must submit to and pass a criminal background check as prescribed by Courts. Employees in this position are subject to random and reasonable suspicion testing for illegal drug use.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of personal computers and standard software applications related to court reporting work.
  2. Knowledge of filing and electronic record-keeping systems.
  3. Knowledge of legal processes and terminology.
  4. Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling, and skill in reading/preparing legal documents.
  5. Advanced skill in communicating effectively using the English language, both orally and in writing.
  6. Skill in application of state and federal guidelines, rules, and statutes to perform essential functions of position.
  7. Advanced skill in discretion and maintaining confidential information.
  8. Advanced skill in handling stress successfully.
  9. Ability to work well with other employees, court professionals, and the public.
  10. Ability to learn and apply policies, procedures, documents, and terminology affecting assigned functions.
  11. Advanced ability to work independently, follow instructions, and multi-task.
