Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Teen Services Librarian provides reference and Readers Advisory services to Library customers as well as leads paraprofessional staff in managing collections and providing programs. Assists Library customers in the use of digital and print resources, and promotes Library resources, programs, and services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Utilizes and accesses information using a broad spectrum of resources, including print, electronic, and online resources.
Provides leadership, training and guidance to staff and the public in the area of Adult & Teen Services.
Provides leadership to teen volunteers by actively recruiting, coordinating meetings, and engaging members in volunteer opportunities.
Provides reference and Readers Advisory assistance, primarily for teens and customers who work with teens. Stays current with adult and teen literature.
Maintains current knowledge of new materials, services, technology, and library trends relevant to teen population.
Works with Collection Services to manage the teen collection. Evaluates materials for replacement, repair, or withdrawal from the Library collection.
Periodically serves as Person In Charge (PIC), providing support for employees, customers, and facility issues.
Collaborates with Marketing and IT to add content and promote services relevant to teen services on the Library website and associated social networking sites.
Performs special projects involving Library promotion and outreach activities aimed at teens or adults who work with teens. Conducts Library tours and provides instruction for school groups visiting the Library. Works collaboratively with teachers and school librarians to promote the different Library services to junior high and high schools.
Develops, implements, and staffs programs for teens.
Prepares reports and statistics review as requested.
Troubleshoots and resolves minor computer hardware and software problems.
Attends professional development opportunities.
Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Uses relevant computer software to access information, answer questions, and perform daily tasks. Familiar with the use of database applications.
Ability to effectively provide reference assistance and instruction services.
Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to successfully lead programs and give presentations.
Strong interpersonal skills, working effectively with individuals of diverse cultures, communication styles, abilities, and backgrounds.
Uses problem-solving skills in determining priorities, finding timely solutions to departmental or system-wide issues.
Service-oriented with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and the public.
Demonstrates a thorough understanding of teen population needs.
Successfully leads and/or collaborates on projects and programs with staff members.
Takes responsibility for consistent completion and follow-up on all tasks.
Responsive to change and demonstrates adaptability.
Maintains a positive approach while doing daily tasks and when faced with adversity.
Demonstrates a broader understanding of the job and looks for ways to improve Library services and support coworkers.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
Master of Library and Information Science degree (ALA accredited college/university).
Library experience required.
Bilingual proficiency a plus.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Communicate with staff and customers in person and over the phone.
May require either being in a stationary position or moving about for prolonged periods.
Moves equipment or library materials weighing up to 35 lbs.
Must have reliable transportation.
