CDM Smith is seeking a Senior Technical Proposal Writer to support strategic pursuits for the North America Unit (NAU). In this role, you will apply your technical background, strategic thinking, and communications skills to translate complex engineering concepts into clear, concise, and persuasive responses to Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from our water, environmental, and transportation clients. As a member of the pursuit team, you will work closely with engineers, technical specialists, and project management stakeholders to understand the client’s problem and expectations, gather technical information, uncover differentiators, and craft content for the approach and related sections that effectively showcases the company's technical solutions. The focus of this role is solely on the technical response, and you will work collaboratively with the strategic pursuit leader, proposal/marketing specialists, and under the guidance of the client service leader to ensure a well-coordinated proposal and presentation that bears a consistent message. This role does not manage the overall proposal, but focuses on the technical approach and related technical sections.

The position can be based out of any CDM Smith office, in the U.S. nationwide. We offer in office or hybrid working environments allowing for flexible work options.

Reporting to the NAU Senior Marketing Manager, you will support selected, complex pursuits each year across NAU and will be engaged from the preselling phase through submittals and interviews. The overall responsibility for this position is to champion, or assist other champions, in the development, writing, graphic development, review, and preparation of the technical/approach sections.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Participate with the pursuit development team, led by the Mega Pursuit Leader, in proposal activities, including capture planning sessions and technical brainstorming and review sessions.
  2. Analyze RFPs and the client’s project objectives to create a technical approach that addresses specific project requirements and potential challenges, highlighting how CDM Smith’s engineering solutions will provide value.
  3. Work with technical specialists and the project manager to facilitate the development of the strategy CDM Smith will use to execute a project, highlighting the key steps to successfully address the client's technical needs while demonstrating a clear understanding of the project requirements and potential challenges.
  4. Apply communication and facilitation skills to gather necessary information from internal and external parties to support writing activities.
  5. Storyboard technical sections and develop detailed outlines that include intended graphics before the technical writing begins.
  6. Write succinct, persuasive content for technical sections (project understanding, approach, schedule, project management plan) within proposal space and format limitations. Translate complex technical solutions developed by others into clear, understandable narratives.
  7. Work with graphic designers to incorporate visuals like diagrams, charts, and graphs to enhance proposal clarity and impact.
  8. Review and edit the contributions of others to ensure accuracy, consistency, tone, and professional presentation, adhering to deadlines and submission requirements.
  9. Ensure exceptional communication, teamwork, and flexibility within the proposal team, while maintaining an elevated level of organization.
  10. Work with teaming partners to formalize shared writing technical assignments.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. 6 years of related experience.
  2. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.
  3. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Significant experience developing technical content for proposals in the AEC industry, demonstrating a successful track record of winning contracts.
  2. Knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and compliance requirements relevant to AEC projects.
  3. Strong time management and organization skills with the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  4. A personality with a positive attitude and confidence to tackle challenges.
  5. Degree in a technical field (e.g., engineering, sciences) or a related field like business administration or communications with a strong technical background.
