Title: Technical Writer - Data Team
Location: Hybrid, Glendale, CA
Compensation: $56-$66.50/hour
Duration: Contract

This role will collaborate closely with data engineers, data product teams, system reliability engineers, and software developers to create and maintain high-quality documentation that supports our data platform's success. This candidate will develop both engineering-focused content covering policies, best practices, and procedures, and user-centered materials that enhance usability and drive user adoption. This role will organize and purge documentation in a methodical and efficient manner leveraging our suite of documentation.

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Technical Writer to join our Studio data team, skilled in translating complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and engaging documentation. In this role, you will collaborate closely with data engineers, data product teams, system reliability engineers, and software developers to create and maintain high-quality documentation that supports our data platform's success. You will play a key role in developing both engineering-focused content covering policies, best practices, and procedures, and user-centered materials that enhance usability, drive user adoption, and support our team’s growth in delivering data products and solutions. You will help us to organize and purge documentation in a methodical and efficient manner leveraging tools such as Confluence and other doc repository solutions.

Responsibilities

1. Collaborate with data engineers, software developers, product managers, and UX teams to gather information and understand project requirements.
2. Research, outline, write, and edit various types of documentation, such as procedure manuals, API developer guides, configuration guides, in-platform instructions, and integration guides for team members, partner teams, and end users.
3. Develop and maintain information architecture templates that support easy updates and data migration, adhering to organizational and legal standards.
4. Evaluate, organize, and update existing documentation repositories, working with development leads to establish best practices for content management and storage.
5. Create alternate formats (e.g., video demos, guided tours) for documentation to maximize usability and engagement.
6. Incorporate feedback from user studies and team insights to refine content, ensuring a consistent voice across all documentation.
7. Provide editing support, ensuring fluency and accuracy in all training and technical content, and offering constructive feedback to maintain quality.

Basic Qualification

1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Communications, Journalism, or a relevant technical field.
2. Minimum of 5 years of technical writing experience, with a proven ability to learn and communicate complex subject matter effectively.
3. Strong written communication skills and an excellent eye for detail.
4. Experience collaborating with engineering teams to enhance user experience through content and visual aids.
5. Proficiency in content management systems, XML, or other documentation tools, as well as experience managing multiple projects and prioritizing tasks.
6. Working knowledge of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and experience creating technical documentation for different audience levels, from end-users to system administrators.
7. Ability to tailor documentation based on the audience.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

1. Previous experience in data, software development, or a related technical field.
2. Professional certification, such as from the Society for Technical Communication.
3. Familiarity with HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Intercom, Confluence, JIRA, Git & GitHub, Wiki, CMS or similar tools.
4. Experience in creating client aids, such as online demos, video guides, and interactive tooltips.
5. Ability to work independently, demonstrating adaptability in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
