The Role:
The Librarian plans, organizes and supervises the activities within a functional program or service division of the library. Functions as supervising librarian on weekends, evenings and as necessary.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science or a related field and two years of relevant library programming experience. Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited university is preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Plans, organizes and conducts activities and programs within a library department.
- Provides patron reference and reader advisory services, performs on-line searches; instructs and assists the public and city departments in the use of electronic databases and e-books.
- Develops, interprets and enforces library policies, procedures and regulations; resolves user complaints and problems.
- Performs research, analyzes and compiles information for the library, City departments, agency administrators and educators and the public.
- May create MARC records for complex materials in English and foreign languages for local and international databases and ensures the integrity of authority records.
- Develops and administers grants for the library.
- Publicizes and promotes library services, programs and collections.
- Modifies or adds new programs or services based on data analysis.
- Networks with other agencies to provide and obtain materials and services.
- Functions as supervising librarian as needed.
- Develops and implements programs for and with outside agencies.
- Represents the library on committees, councils, professional conferences and meetings.
- Selects materials, evaluates collection, makes decisions regarding purchases and collection maintenance for assigned areas.
- Evaluates donated and damaged materials for disposition.
- Researches and compiles research information on request; develops annotated bibliographies, indices and study guides.
- Participates in the development or revision of library policies and procedures.
- Enforces library policies, procedures and regulations with patrons.
- Conducts library tours, makes presentations to school and community groups both on and off site.
- Participates in the development of long-term library goals and strategies.
- May assist with selecting and training staff, temporary personnel and volunteers.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science or a related field and two years of relevant library programming experience. Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited university is preferred.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.

- Professional library theories, issues, and trends
- Principles and techniques of library materials selection, including standards and procedures
- Computerized cataloging, bibliographical, and circulation system databases
- Sources of information on specialized library materials as well as general book trade and review media
- Professional library publications and the literature of librarianship
- Specialized bibliographic and reference tools as well as general reference tools and services
- Materials and services available in public libraries
- Community agencies' functions and resources
- Research techniques and practices
- Effective supervisory practices
- Basic principles and procedures of professional library work, including methods, practices and techniques of library classification, cataloging and references
- Basic reference tools and services; specialized bibliographic and reference tools
- Automation and electronic resources used in a library
Ability to:
- Communicate with and respond pleasantly to a demanding and diverse public
- Work well with children, teen and adult patrons
- Remain calm and efficient under pressure at the public service desk
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Maintain current awareness of professional issues and developments
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, coworkers and the general public
- Organize indexing projects involved in opening collections of materials for better information access
- Assist in coordinating purchases, collecting, compiling and analyzing monthly statistics and scheduling staff
- Locate obscure and specialized materials from nonstandard sources
- Exercise initiative in the improvement, development and conduct of library programs
- Develop professional expertise in selected subject areas and library system operations
Special Requirements:
- Requires evening, weekend and holiday work.
